Objective

The aim of the course is increasing your understanding of working with families, especially from the perspective of child welfare work.

Intended learning outcomes:

You know how to plan, carry out and evaluate a family work process that is safe for the client, supporting the client's participation and resources. You are able to support the growth, development, and everyday life of family members in a goal-oriented manner in different life situations. You understand the significance of family work and know how to deal with different change and crisis situations of a client. You understand the importance of supporting parenting and an intimate partner relationship as part of family work.

You recognise and evaluate the significance of societal phenomena and power structures as well as their impact on families' possibilities to operate in society. You know how to promote and strengthen the agency and participation of family members.

Content

The core content of the course comprises child-centric family work and its process from the perspective of both early support and child welfare; identifying a family’s resources and support needs. The course examines the concept of a family and the phenomena of family life as well as support for parenting and an intimate partner relationship.

Qualifications

Understanding the principles and values of child welfare. Knowledge of social welfare and the child welfare processes of individual children and families.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1= You are able to describe the process of child-centric family work from the perspective of both early support and child welfare. You are able to describe the concept of a family and name phenomena of family life. You are able to give examples of families’ resources, identification of support needs, and ways to support a family and its different members. You able to talk about support for parenting and an intimate partner relationship as part of family work.

2= You are able to describe the process of child-centric family work from the perspective of both early support and child welfare and give examples of it. You are able to define the concept of a family and explain phenomena of family life. You are able to give examples of families’ resources and define identification of support needs and ways to support a family and its different members. You able to describe support for parenting and an intimate partner relationship as part of family work.

You are able to define the concept of a family and explain phenomena of family life from several different perspectives. You are able to interpret the concept of a family and analyse phenomena of family life from several different perspectives. You are able to give examples of families’ resources and analyse identification of support needs and ways to support a family and its different members. You are able to justify support for parenting and an intimate partner relationship as part of family work.
