Objectives

Purpose of the course:
The purpose of the course is to broaden and deepen your knowledge of environmental diversity and to provide tools for assessing and modifying the environment to enhance human agency.

Learning objectives of the course
After completing this course, you will understand the impact of the environment on the human right to fulfil a person's occupational needs. You will be familiar with the complexity of the concepts of environment and accessibility as well as the basics of assessing and modifying the environment. You will understand the process of acquiring assistive devices and the potential of home modifications as a means of increasing human participation and agency. You will be able to consider the diversity of the working environment, and issues affecting safety and ergonomics and be aware of the potential of technology in rehabilitation.

Environment as a concept in different frames of references, such as ICF
Accessibility, environmental management support devices and home modifications
Assistive devices and the acquiring process
Digital environment and accessibility
Working environment, ergonomics and well-being at work

Time and location

The course includes face-to-face teaching at Jamk campus and is best suited to students living near Jyväskylä.

Teaching methods

The course includes face-to-face sessions, online learning, assignments and exams.Flipped learning is used with the learning sessions.

Through face-to-face and online learning, you will learn about the impact of the environment on people's right to fulfil their functional needs. You will practise how to use assistive devices, looking at accessibility and writing an assistive device recommendation. Through learning tasks, you will deepen your knowledge of assistive technology and accessibility as enablers of client participation. As you prepare for the exam, you will learn more about the complexity of the concept of environment, the potential of technology as part of the occupational therapy client's environment, accessibility, ergonomics and coping at work. The exam will assess your knowledge of these topics.

The mid term feedback will be collected in the middle of the course.

Exam dates will be given in the beginning of the course.

Opintojakson mahdollisesta hyväksiluvusta tulee olla päätös jo ennen opintojakson toteutuksen alkua, sillä ryhmätehtävään liittyvä ryhmäjako tehdään jo ensimmäisellä opetuskerralla.

Assessment of learning is based on the learning outcomes. Assessment is based on student performance in exam and assignments. In addition, students must demonstrate their competence in lessons (webinars / face-to-face sessions) and preparation tasks.

1 Sufficient
The student has sufficient knowledge about environmental accessibility and home modifications. The student remembers some assistive devices and the processes of delivering the devices to clients. The student can find evidence-based information but can use it weakly. The student recalls facts about accessibility and assistive devices and can make a plan for a home visit as an occupational therapist. (course assignment)
