Learning outcomes of the course
After completing the course, the student knows basic concepts and principles of mechanics and is able to perform measurements analysis of simple mechanical systems.
In addition, the student masters basic principles of measuring and has observed physical phenomena in practice. The student masters 1- and 2-dimensional kinematics and dynamics. The student is familiar with the international system of units of measurement, Newton’s laws and the concept of measurement error.
EA-KN Knowledge and Understanding: The student obtains mechanics and measuring readiness for the field of technology.
EA-IV EUR-ACE Investigations: The student is able to perform lab measurements for research purposes and to explore phenomena in mechanics.
YHTOP Learning Skills: The student is able to critically assess their results utilizing calculators, tables and information technology. They are able to share their knowledge and apply the obtained reporting and physics skills to their other studies.
Basics of measurements and analysis of results, i.e. research on mechanical systems utilizing measuring and mathematical analysis of results.
The course also contains basics in mechanics topics: uniform motion, uniformly accelerated motion, projectiles in two dimensions, force, Newton’s laws, friction, work, power, efficiency, energy.
The course may contain degree program specific topics.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Assessment criteria - grade 1 and 2
The assessment is based on mid-term tests or exam and lab exercises as well as possibly calculation exercises and peer-assessment.
Sufficient (1): The student knows the most part of mechanics basics and terminology (1- and 2-dimensional kinematics and dynamics) and has performed basic measurements and written reports on them.
Satisfactory (2): The student knows the key parts of mechanics.
Assessment criteria - grade 3 and 4
Good (3): The student knows key parts of mechanics and is able to apply them to simple basic cases.
Very good (4): The student masters the key parts of mechanics and is able to apply them to most common cases.
Assessment criteria - grade 5
Excellent (5): The student masters excellently all course parts within mechanics and is able to apply the learning to challenging situations.
