Objective

The object of the course
Having taken this course you understand the meaning of statistics and the possibilities of statistics in developing work. You are able to utilize statistical methods in research and development.

The learning objectives of the course
After completing this course, you will understand the possibilities of statistical methods on developing work. You know basic concepts related to data gathering, data sets and variables. You will know the principles of making a questionnaire. You can calculate and interpret descriptive statistics, and know the basics of making quality tables and visualization of the results. You will be able to utilize the MS Excel and possibly another statistical program.

Content

1. Data sets: how to gather data and basics of making a questionnaire
2. What statistics tell: how statistics can be utilized in decision making
3. Summarizing results as a table
4. Graphical visualization of the results
5. Descriptive statistics: location and deviation, correlation
6. Simple analysis methods: modelling dependency and time series

We go through the course material via weekly exercises. Some of these will be done together at lecture hours.

The course will be graded based on learning assignments and final test.

Assessment criteria:

5 (excellent) : The student can independently find and evaluate quantitative research. The student is able to independently utilize statistical data in research and can apply his knowledge in decision making. The student knows the research ethics thoroughly and can apply his knowledge in research.

4 (very good) : The student can find and evaluate quantitative research well. The student is able to utilize statistical data almost independently in research and can apply his knowledge in decision making. The student knows the research ethics and can apply his knowledge in research.

3 (good): The student can find and evaluate quantitative research. The student is able to utilize statistical data in research with help from supervisor and can apply some of his knowledge in decision making. The student knows the research ethics and can apply his knowledge in research.

2 (satisfactory): The student can find relevant research articles and can evaluate quantitative research with help. The student is partially able to utilize statistical data in research with help from supervisor. The student knows the research ethics and can apply his knowledge in research.

1 (poor): The student can find research articles. The student is able to utilize statistical data in research a little bit with help from supervisor. The student knows the research ethics.

0 (fail): The student can not find research articles. The student is not able to utilize statistical data in research. The student does not know the research ethics.
