Objective

The aim of the course:

Music History 1:
You know and recognise the basic styles, tendencies and personalities of Western art music from Antique to the beginning of 19th Century.

Music Analysis 1:
You know and recognise the basic compositions and their formal structure from Gregorian chant to Classicism in Music. You know their backgrounds and can explain the structure with analytical terms.

Solfege 1:
You know the styles and different periods from Antique to Baroque in Music, both written and listened. You also can perform the by singing.

In this course you learn musical phenomena by analysing, recognising, writing down and you can write down the music you hear. You also learn how to use a tool for distant learning.

Content

Music History 1:

The phenomena of Western Music as part of the historic and cultural changes from Antique to the beginning of the 19th Century. Musical features, composers and central forms of Music.

Music Analysis 1:

Compositional forms of Western Music form Gregorian chant to Classicism. Divided into three parts: a) The forms of old music, b) The forms of Baroque Music and c) The forms of Classicism.

Solfege 1:

Each period main phenomena as applied to singing, listening and writing. Middle Ages: church modes as seen in melodies, Gregorian Chant, other art songs, beginnings and development of polyphonic music, dance music. Renaissance: Vocal polyphony, Church modes, instrumental music. Baroque: Tonality, homophony, polyphony and typical compositions.

Teaching methods

Music History 1:
Lectures and analytical listening. Also distant learning methods.

Music Analysis 1:
Lectures and the analysis of written music (scores and sheet music). Working as individual or in groups. Also given assignments.

Solfege 1:
Lectures, assignments and individual work.

Exam schedules

Music History 1 and Music analysis 1: Both have three parts that are done with assignments, sample works and exams. The exams are in November, March and May.
Aural training: twice a year exams: written and aural consist of written music, prima vista, and prepared tasks.

Aural training : a) Old music until 1600 cent. ( September-January) b) Baroque music (January-May )

Music History 1:

You know some musical periods from Music History and you are able to name some composers. You know some terminology in Music History.

2:
You are able to identify the main periods of Music History. You are able to name the main composers and you know some special terminology associated with Music History.

Music Analysis 1:

1:
You know some of the style period compositions. You have the basic knowledge of how to analyse the main compositions of a musical style period.

2:
You have the basic knowledge of analysis. You can figure out the structural sections in a composition by reading the score. You know the main composition forms in a style period and you know the differences between them.

Solfege 1:

1:
You know some of the basic things in solfege, but you have problems in many areas.

2:
You know the main things in solfeggi, but some individual parts are challenging.

Music History 1:

In addition to musical style periods, you can name the main techniques and terminology. You know the basic works of Music History also by listening.

Besides the Good (3) knowledge you know the main composers and their backgrounds and also the time frame in History that they are associated.

Music analysis 1:

3:
You know the main structural principles of a composition and can use the knowledge in analysis. You also know the different composition forms in a style period and are able to figure out not only structures but also harmonies.

4:
Besides the Good (3) knowledge you understand a composition in it's entirety, from small forms to a bigger whole. You can analyse more challenging works just by yourself.

Solfege 1:

3:
You have a clear understanding of music just by listening.You can read the usual type of scores and invent some means to get by

Music History 1:

5:
You know the meaning of music historical periods in what music is today. You know the different styles, techniques and terminology used in different musical time periods and also the reasons behind them.

Music analysis 1:

5:
You have advanced knowhow of how to analyse different compositions in different time periods. You can also analyse exceptional and problematic compositions.
