Objective

The object of the course
After completing this course, you will have gained basic skills required in working in the tourism industry. You will know how to interact with people from different cultures and you know what digital skills are needed in tourism work. You will also acquire key certificates that are commonly required in tourism work nationally.

The learning objectives of the course
You understand the international nature of the tourism industry and importance for capability to work in multicultural teams. You are familiar with cultural dimensions and, with the help of the relevant theories, are able to identify and appreciate cultural diversities in intercultural interaction. You know the basic concepts in digitalization in tourism. You recognize the value and general applications of ICT tools in tourism industry. You complete the certificates needed to work in tourism business in Finland: Alcohol proficiency certificate, Hygiene proficiency certification and safety passports.

The principal contents of this course are (1) Operating in multicultural environment and teams, (2) Intercultural understanding, (3) Basic concepts in digitalization in tourism, (4) Introduction to e-tourism, (5) An alcohol proficiency certificate, (6) Hygiene proficiency, and (7) Safety competence.

Teaching methods

Lectures, independent reading materials and information search, discussions, assignments (intercultural analysis, group presentations), peer and self-reflection.

Employer connections

Alumni visitor (video lecture) - JAMK alumni visits the course to tell about hew own work, career path and experiences in e-tourism.
Student will gain three concrete work passports (hygiene, alcohol, first aid) that are needed in tourism work in Finland.

Exam schedules

Course includes two tests.
- Hygiene passport test is provided in class room. One or more date options for hygiene passport examination will be informed at the beginning of the course. Two test opportunities are provided.
- Alcohol proficiency test is done independently by reserving a personal exam time from the exam studio in Rajakatu campus. Duration of test availability will be informed at the beginning of the course.

International connections

Intercultural understanding and communication skills are gained through discussions in international groups, intercultural team work, self-reflection and games.

Vaihtoehtoiset suoritustavat

Students can apply for partial accreditation if they have a valid cerfitication in hygiene passport, alcohol passport, first aid card (EA1, EA2, emergency first aid), or tourism safety passport (Matupa).

Content scheduling

Lectures will be mainly in class room but online participation options may be provided depending on situation. More information when the course starts. Passport trainings that lead in certification are provided as follows:
- Hygiene passport test is provided only in class room
- Alcohol proficiency test in exam studio at Rajakatu campus
- First Aid training is provided in class room and/or virtually
- Further safety competence can be studied online.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Unless otherwise provided by the curriculum, the grading scale is Pass (S) or Fail (0).

Criteria for acceptable performance Pass (S): You demonstrate capability to work in multicultural teams. You can describe cultural dimensions and explain cultural diversities in intercultural interaction. You identify the basic concepts in digitalization in tourism. You can describe general ICT tools in tourism industry. You have completed the certificates needed to work in tourism business in Finland: Alcohol proficiency certificate, Hygiene proficiency certification and safety competence.

The course assessment is Fail (0) if the student fails to achieve the minimum learning objectives for passing the course.
