Objective

In addition to product design, technical documentation and drawings are an essential part of supply chain information. In this course, you will learn to read and draw technical drawings and model extensive 3D designs using CAD (computer aided design) design software. You will also learn the basics of product data management and how it interacts with other enterprise information systems. You will learn how to evaluate and develop your own skills in technology design, selection and use.

Course Competencies:
Competences to be promoted and assessed in this course include knowledge of the rules and methods of technical drawing, technical design skills, information systems competence and development competence.

The Learning Objectives of the Course:
You understand the meaning of the technical drawing rules and recognize the symbols and markings used in the drawing. You know how product structures are formed and you understand how product information relates to other enterprise information systems. You learn how to draw two-dimensional (2D) drawings using CAD and apply the basic rules of technical drawing. You learn to model and modify 3D structures with 2D drawings and 3D elements.

Content

Theory of Technical Drawing: Basic rules for drawing such as scale, line types, sections and dimensioning. Symbols used in drawing, such as surface roughness and welding marks, and geometric tolerances. Size tolerances and system of fits.

Basics of Product Data Management: What is an item, SKU? Item data. Formation of assembly structure (parts list). Revision and version control. Traceability and product life cycle.

3D Modeling basics: starting from simple models ending to an assembly containing several components.

Manufacturing Drawings: how to make drawings out of 3D-models, includiing dimensioning and other features required in manufacturing.

3D Layout Design: Project work modeling a logistics center with warehouse and office space.

Inventor Student Licence. Requires your own PC. The software runs well also in current basic laptops.

Teaching methods

The course is 100% virtual / remote implementation.

Teaching is based on lecture and instructional videos, learning assignments, joint dialogue between students and the teacher in the course's peer support / discussion forum.

The course is divided into five sections, which differ slightly from each other.
1. In the PDM section, you will become familiar with product data management through lecture videos and independent learning assignments. The section also includes project work in a group, so you also need to be an active member of the group in a virtual environment.
2. In the Technical Drawing Theory section, you will become familiar with the rules and presentations of technical drawing independently through lecture videos and literature in each subject area. Each topic area includes learning tasks to be answered in Moodle that map your skills.
3. In the Basics of 3D Modeling, you will learn modeling and design with Inventor software with the help of teacher’s video instructions, from simple models to multi-component assembly.
4. In the Manufacturing Drawings, you will utilize and apply the learnings and content of the previous sections in your assignments. Teacher's videos help and guide your work. You design and draw the components independently and reflect on what you have learned by reviewing your drawings yourself using Moodle tools.
5. In the Layout Design section, you will have more freedom to show your 3D modeling skills in the plan of an entire logistics center. The videos produced by the teacher can be used as a hint and aid, but at this point you already have enough skills for more independent planning.

Vaihtoehtoiset suoritustavat

The admission procedures are described in the degree rule and the study guide. The teacher of the course will give you more information on possible specific course practices.

Student workload

One credit corresponds to an average of 27 hours of work, which means that the load of five credits is approximately 135 hours. The load is distributed in different ways depending on the course implementation.

Content scheduling

In active implementation, the student is responsible for scheduling the performance. The introduction to the course presents a recommended rhythm that you should utilize to build your own schedule.
Final deadline for all the tasks: Sunday of week 48.
