Objectives

After completing the course, you will be able to express yourself with your main instrument in a natural, high-quality and stylistic way, taking into account the level-specific requirements of the instrument. You recognise the level of your instrument skills and the importance of its continuous maintenance and development, as well as your own readiness for continuously learn with your main instrument. In cooperation with your teacher, you find repertoire appropriate to your technical level and suitable for your development and set appropriate goals for your instrument skills. You understand the importance of the right training methods in terms of your development, and you train appropriately under the guidance of your teacher. You know how to practice prima vista skills with appropriate exercises for the development of your instrument skills.

You know how to organise and distribute live streaming on a streaming channel. You are able to record, edit and share audio with a mobile recorder. You know how to use and utilise accompaniment and transcription applications to support your instrumental studies. If needed, you can assemble the appropriate PA system and use it. You understand the importance of ergonomics and hearing care.

Content

In the course, you will study the technical skills of your main instrument, knowledge of musical periods and genres as well as repertoire, music reading and prima vista skills, musical creativity and interpretation, performance, and digital skills.

Time and location

Teaching is organised at the Finnish Music Campus.

Learning materials and recommended literature

The learning material is instrument-specific teaching material.

Teaching methods

Instrument lessons, independent work, first-year instrumental demonstration and related practical arrangements.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

First-year instrumental demonstration by the end of February.

Evaluation methods include continuous feedback from the supervising teacher, self-evaluation and first-year instrumental demonstration.

In choosing a study path, in addition to the instrumental demonstration, the following areas are evaluated from the entire academic year's studies: technical and musical competence of the main instrument, repertoire, prima vista skills, professional working skills, suitability for the desired study path.

You express yourself naturally with your main instrument with your current technical and musical skills and identify your level of expertise. You have the ability to continuous learning with your main instrument, and you recognise the importance of continuously maintaining and developing instrument expertise. You can outline stylistic musical elements and play the repertoire you practice, striving for style. In collaboration with your teacher, you set goals that are relevant to your instrument expertise and choose repertoire that corresponds to your technical level and is suitable and optimal for your development. You understand the importance of prima vista skills and choose appropriate exercises to develop them. You are able to utilise music related streaming platforms as part of your studies. You are able to record, edit and share audio with a mobile device. You know how to use a simple PA system, if needed. You remember the basics of ergonomics and hearing care and know how to utilise them in your work.

Prerequisites

Music institute level or equivalent knowledge and skills in your main instrument.

Further information

The course includes an instrumental demonstration in the spring of the first year, followed by a choice of the study path.

Student's right to instrument studies:

The student's instrument teaching may be denied if other studies do not proceed as agreed with the teacher tutor / study supervisor and the head. The minimum number of credits for studies completed during the academic year must be 40 credits. Otherwise, the instrument teaching for the next academic year will be considered.

If a student has completed previous university-level instrument studies at the beginning of his or her studies, then the amount of instrument teaching provided will be assessed on a student-by-student basis. When assessing the amount of instrument teaching required to achieve the degree's competence goal, the level of instrument competence achieved by the student before the start of studies is taken into account. The head of the Degree Programme decides the amount of teaching to be given at the beginning of the studies.
