Objective

The students understand the significance of control systems in modern networked business operations. The students can organize and classify the characteristics and applications areas of different control systems. The students understand how the systems are connected to each other and how transports are managed in networked business operations. The students can use different design systems and they recognize their possibilities in strategic, tactic and operative levels. The students can analyze the implementation and the schedule of a transport with transport’s information systems.

Content

Lecture part which introduces:
- design levels
- viewpoints of transport providers and users
- general characteristics of operations management systems
- characteristics and division of design systems
- spatial data system
- GPS and data-transmission systems
- equipment management system and driver resources management
- measuring and defining the amount of transport equipment by software
Use of software
SAP, transport provider’s operations management system, ArcGIS, Network Analyst, Route map Suomi Plus, optimization program What’s Best or equivalent, ED simulation program, Dynafleet database program or equivalent
Excursions to transport companies
GPS and laboratory work of data transfer and equipment management
Transport economy

Principles of forming an information system, office applications, mathematics, methods of operational analysis, basics of logistics

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Satisfactory (1-2)
The students skills have developed in a satisfactory way and they pass the assignments satisfactorily by using different methods to some extent and they apply the characteristics of software satisfactorily. Not enough participation. Theoretical background is understood satisfactorily.

Good (3) The students’ skills have developed well and they make the assignments well by using enough different methods and by applying the characteristics of software well. Active participation. Theoretical background is well understood.

Very good (4) The students’ skills have developed very well and they make the assignments very well by using sufficiently different methods and by applying the characteristics of software very well. Active participation. Theoretical background is very well understood.

Teaching methods

This is a virtual course completely online with recorded lectures and guest lectures. It is based on distance learning and learning tasks either individually or in groups.

Evaluation is based on the total number of points from the exercises, this forms the grade 1-5.
