2. Understand the overall development and history of 20th century popular music within the framework of society and the music industry 3. Have a good knowledge of the history of popular music genres, artists and musical features 4. Analytically identify and locate the stylistic features of different musical styles by listening to audio examples 5. Understand the role of songwriters, performers and record producers in popular music.

The students will also be able to

Sisältö

Starting point is to figure out the basic terminology and consepts of music through classical music.From this point of view module provides an overview of the most pertinent genres of western popular music created within the conventions of the 20th century music industry. Insight is given to the essential musical features and the history of the genres and artists in context within the development of society and the music industry. The genres studied are: Pop & rock music; Jazz; Blues; Country; “World Music”; Modern “electronic” music (rap, hip hop, techno, drum´n´bass...) Within each genre, attention is paid to the analysis of the main factors shaping the actual sound of popular music: song writing and/or composing, performance practices, and record production practices. Due to time limitations, some genres will be dealt more as a reading/listening assignments than others.
