Objective

Purpose of the course:

The aim of the course is to learn how to use basic medical knowledge in social and health care client work and to learn essential first aid skills.

Course competences:

Ethical competences (Common to all)
Assessment of rehabilitation needs and opportunities (Degree program of Rehabilitation Counsellor).
Professional and inter-professional activities in physiotherapy (Degree program of Physiotherapy)
Theoretical expertise in rehabilitation and occupational therapy (Degree program of Occupational therapy)

Course objective:

You will understand the potential medical challenges faced by rehabilitation patients in the rehabilitation process, which affect the rehabilitant's ability to work and function, overall condition and rehabilitation potential. You can identify and understand the most common medical terminology. You outline and understand the medical entity. You will master essential first aid skills.

Content

The main contents of the course are the basics of biomedicine and clinical medicine, basic concepts of medicine and the impact of the client's medical condition on his or her functioning. It also covers the role of the physician in interprofessional collaboration and in the assessment and description of functioning. It will also cover the etiology, treatment and rehabilitation processes of the most common groups of diagnoses required in rehabilitation (e.g. cerebrovascular disorders, mental disorders, musculoskeletal disorders) and the content of rehabilitation medicine. In addition, the role of medical episode in the life course of a person, such as multi-morbidity, congenital diseases and injuries, or getting illness during life, on an individual's need for rehabilitation will be examined.

The course also includes first aid skills.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You will be able to identify potential medical challenges faced by the rehabilitation process that affect the rehabilitant's ability to work and function, their overall situation and their chances of rehabilitation. You will be able to define the most common medical concepts and the medical system as a whole. You will master basic first aid skills.

This course is 3 credits for physiotherapy and occupational therapy students and 2 credits for rehabilitation counselling students (first aid not included).
