Objective

The student can write one and several voice textures in historical musical styles from Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism. The student is able to write in homophonic, polyphonic and contrapuntal style.

Content

Western Music's structures in mainly counterpoint and melody harmonisation.
Consists from three parts: a) Renaissance counterpoint, b) Harmonisation and c) Baroque counterpoint.

Qualifications

The student has the know-how of the main concepts of Western music's harmony, melody, and voice leading. Accepted completion of music school's D-course level harmony/figured bass and/or 50% of the maximum points in entrance examination. In other cases, accepted completion of the course Principles of Theory

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Music Writing 1 consists of three parts: a) Renaissance counterpoint, b) Harmonisation and c) a Fugue in Baroque style. The Harmonisation is made in an exam and the rest are individual works/compositions. Each part is 1/3 of 100%.

Excellent 5
The student is quite advanced in knowledge about music writing in diverse styles. He/She is also able to apply this fluently and creatively. The student is also able to write fluently in cases of exceptional harmony and counterpoint. Almost flawless writing.

Praiseworthy 4
Apart form the Good (3) level, he student has a view of how the written musical work should sound and has the means (most important ways and techniques)to achieve this.


Good 3
The student has the ability to write music in diverse styles generally. He/She can apply the knowledge in different but basic situations.

Satisfactory 2
The student knows the basics of harmony and counterpoint. He/She is able to write musical texture using those main techniques, remaining within the context of a given style. There are some flaws in bigger context and also in details.

Passable 1
The student can write in only very basic level of harmony or counterpoint. He/She is struggling in most of the different writing styles.

Fail 0
The course fails when the minimum requirements are not met.
