Key learning outcomes
During the studies in Bachelor's degree in Nursing, you gain strong and extensive competence in nursing, emphasising health promotion and clinical competence as well as the digital and data protection skills required in nursing. In the studies, you can also develop professional competence in nursing from the perspectives of internationalisation, multiculturalism and sustainable development. You learn innovation and project competence as well as teamwork skills in multidisciplinary, working life orientated studies.
Education content and professional growth and know-how
The degree studies in nursing are based on nursing science and the fields of science that support it, such as natural and medical sciences as well as social and behavioural sciences.
Approximately one half of your studies are implemented as practical training that promotes professional skills in accordance with your personal learning plan (PLP) in social welfare and health care services, projects and Jamk’s simulation environments. You can also develop your competence by completing theoretical studies and/or practical training abroad, either in English or in other languages you know. Some of the studies included in the degree are completed in English in Finland. Some of your studies are implemented in research and development projects.
During the first year of studies, you develop your competence in the basics of nursing, health promotion and evaluation of functional capacity. During the second and third year, you learn about the different areas of nursing while strengthening theoretical and clinical nursing competence, decision-making skills, and guidance and teaching skills. In the last six months of studies, you deepen your competence in developing expertise studies in accordance with your interests and career preferences in one area of nursing, such as in primary health care reception work, surgery ward or emergency clinic, mental health care work or paediatrics. In developing expertise studies, you also strengthen your competence in health evaluation, management and nursing ethics and professionalism.
The studies include a thesis, which is a research, development or innovation project carried out on the basis of workplace development needs.
Since spring 2021, nationally uniform assessment methods have been introduced in education leading to a nursing degree. They consist of sub-tests for clinical core competence taken at different stages of the studies and a national test for core competence (180 ECTS). (yleSHarviointi project 2019.)
Flexible studies
Your personal learning and career plan enables you to complete your studies in your own schedule. You can complete some of your studies in English-language nursing training. In the Simulation learning environment, you can also practice basic nursing skills together with students in the English-language degree programme in Nursing.
You can choose your alternative or elective studies from EduFutura partner institutions (University of Jyväskylä and Gradia) and international studies from European EUDRES higher education institutions. You can also choose from Finnish and foreign partner universities, such as other universities of applied sciences and universities. You can apply for accreditation of higher education studies that you have completed elsewhere.
Working life oriented learning
Working life orientated learning is included throughout your UAS studies as practical training promoting professional skills, the thesis and various working life projects. At Jamk, the operating model for working life-orientated and student-orientated learning is Jamk Future Factory®. It brings together business actors, students, Jamk specialists and working life orientated learning environments. In addition to multidisciplinary and working life oriented project studies, it offers the opportunity to develop your future working life skills, career path and working life networks.
Studification is also among the options offered by working life oriented learning. It refers to combining work, project work, Jamk Future Factory activities, etc. with studies. You draw up a study plan of studification and document it as agreed with the teacher.
