Objective

1st study year:

The students can write one and several voice textures in styles ranging from Gregorian Chant to Classical Period, homophonically and contrapunctally.

2nd study year:

The student are able to write single and many voiced textures in styles ranging from Romanticism to the present, homophonically and contrapunctally.

Content

1st study year:

Western Music's structures as concerns mainly counterpoint and melody harmonisation.
There is a three part division: a) Old Music ounterpoint, b) Harmonisation and c) Baroque counterpoint and Classic composition forms.

2nd study year:

Western Music's structures, counterpoint and melody harmonisation. There is a two part division: a) Romantic harmony and b) 20th Century harmony.

Qualifications

1st year:
The students command the main concepts of Western music's harmony, melody, and principles of voice leading. Accepted completion of music institute level harmony/figured bass and/or 50% of the maximum points in entrance examination. In other cases, accepted completion of the course Principles of Theory

2nd year:
The students gather experience in writing music beginnin from Gregorian Chant to Classicism plus the 1st study year's required knowhow.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Praiseworthy 4 - Excellent 5
The students are quite advanced in knowledge about music writing in diverse styles. They are also able to apply this fluently and creatively. They are also able to write fluently in cases of exceptional harmony and counterpoint. The students are able also to impart their knowledge if needed.

Good 3
The students command the ability to write music in diverse styles generally. They can apply their knowlege in different situations fluently. The students have a view of how the written music text would sound and have the means to achieve this purpose.

Passable 1 - Satisfactory 2
The students command the basics of harmony and counterpoint. They are able to write music text using those main techniques, remaining within the context of a given style. The students participate in contact teaching and complete their assignments.

Fail 0
The course is failed when the minimum requirements are not met
