Maternity and women´s nursing (3cr)

Objective

The purpose of the course:
You learn basic knowledge in women´s health and maternity care. By studying this course you will get competence to empower client and their family by promoting and counselling sexual and reproductive health. After this course you know the basics in gynecological illnesses, treatments and nursing methods in women´s health. You have basic knowledge in maternity care during physiological pregnancy, labour and postpartum time.

Learning outcomes:
After studying this course you know the basics in gynecological illnesses, treatments and nursing methods in women´s health. You have basic knowledge in maternity care during physiological pregnancy, labor and postpartum time.
You understand and are able to justify the meaning of empowering approach in planning, implementing and evaluating the care of women and their families.
You practice most common terminology and phrases in Finnish language related to sexual and reproductive health promotion and patient guidance.

The basics of Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion at Different Life Stages in Women and the Family
Multi-professional co-operation in nursing processes in women´s health and maternity care
Empowering approach in co-operation with women and their families
The basics of gynecological illnesses and the basics of their monitoring and nursing interventions
The main evidence-based nursing interventions and examinations in women´s health and assenting in examinations
Physiological pregnancy, labor and postpartum time
The main evidence-based nursing interventions and examinations in maternity nursing
Basics of breastfeeding guidance
Finnish language terminology and phrases for sexual and reproductive health

Qualifications

You master the methods of health promotion, medical nursing, mental health management.

You master the contents of anatomy and physiology as well as of pharmacology and medicine related to the above mentioned nursing studies.

You know the basics of evidence-based decision making.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient 1

You are able to list the most important gynecological illnesses, their monitoring and treatment. You know the course of physiological pregnancy, labor and postpartum time.
You are able to name main examinations and nursing interventions in women´s health and maternity nursing.
You are able to list the principles of promoting sexual and reproductive health in women and the family.
You can describe parts of empowering process thinking in planning, implementing and evaluating evidence-based nursing for woman and family.
You recognize basic sexual and reproductive health promotion terminology and phrases in Finnish.


Satisfactory 2

You are able to describe the most important gynecological illnesses, their monitoring and treatment. You are able to describe the course of physiological pregnancy, labor and postpartum time.
