Objective

The students will more profoundly understand Hispanic culture also in work-related situations. They are able to adequately apply their linguistic and cultural knowledge in basic interaction in everyday situations, for example at work and when traveling in Spanish speaking countries. The students are able to manage brief telephone conversations and presentations, talk about opinions, and formulate messages, stories and descriptions in writing.

Content

Spain and Spanish speaking world: interaction in everyday life, holidays, traveling and work, media and the news, brief presentations and negotiations. The central grammar includes the future, the past tenses and the subjunctive (present tense).

5 (Excellent) Student is able to fluently communicate in everyday social encounters and routine discussions also at work. Student can interact fairly spontaneously respecting cultural norms. Student is able to use central vocabulary and sentence structures in a natural way. Student can write brief messages almost flawlessly. Student is able to understand clear standard speech.
4 (Very good) Student is able to communicate fairly fluently in most regular social encounters pertinent to everyday life, also at work. Student can interact with relative spontaneity respecting cultural norms. Student can understand various texts on familiar topics and also texts of their personal interest. Student is able to follow clear standard speech and take part in it, and understand the main point of many TV and radio programs of personal interest.
3 (Good) Student is able to deal with everyday situations likely to arise when travelling in the areas where Spanish is spoken. Student is able to interact in basic work-related tasks both orally and in writing, although there may be some hesitation and minor problems with the language. Student can understand standard texts and TV programs on familiar topics.
2 (Satisfactory) Student can deal with everyday situations in Spanish although with some effort and problems. Student is able to understand brief texts and TV programs on clearly narrated and familiar topics. Student can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans both orally and in writing.
1 (Sufficient) Student is able to interact in Spanish and deal with situations in everyday life. Student is able to understand clear speech and also talk about familiar, work-related topics, although some problems occur with basic structures. The vocabulary is quite limited. Student can write brief messages and arrange meetings, but errors with language take place.

If the student does not meet the minimum criteria set for the
course, the grade is 0 (Fail).
