Objectives

The object of the course
Are you familiar with different digital media types? Do you want to know how to edit, design and create assets and content for various projects? Basics for Digital Media course gives you a jumpstart on various tools and methods to help you to edit, create and design different types of visual media.

Course competences

- Learn to learn: is able to acquire, critically assess and appropriately apply the national and international knowledge base and practices of their field.
- Operating in a workplace: utilises the opportunities offered by technology and digitalisation in their work.

Tiko:
- Information System Competence: Is able to produce and publish content for different platforms.
- Information System Competence: Is familiar with typical information systems and services and understands the importance of security in utilizing services.

BIT:
-Business competence: student understands the meaning of contracts, offers, licences and copyrights in his or her own work. Student can design and carry out a training on a familiar topic.
-Cross-disciplinary competence in games: student can apply skills and knowledge in a special field of game production, development or design, or other field of study with link to digital games.
-Systems and methods in ICT: Student can design and publish online content for different platforms
Learning outcomes

After completing the course, you will understand the basic tools, methods and concepts of different types of digital media. You will be able to define and choose a correct media format for a task at hand. You will understand the meaning of digital media in visual design.

You will learn specific application tools, as well as understand the informational aspects of the visual communication.

You will learn the importance of client requirements. You will be able to work and produce technically correct material according to given instructions.

Content

In the course you will be focused on the basic concepts related to digital media: file types, working tools, visual communication, visual design and editing. Application software and tools used are the ones most commonly used in professional visual design and communication.

Evaluation criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Sufficient (1): You have knowledge of the basic tools, methods and concepts. You know how to work with application software. You can produce material according to given instructions.

Satisfactory (2): You understand which tools or methods to select for the task at hand. You understand the application software and can produce material according to given instructions while taking note on the different requirements.

Evaluation criteria, good (3-4)

Good (3): You understand which tools and methods work best for the task at hand. You can work fluently with the application software and can produce material taking client requirements into account while using effective techniques.

Very good (4): You understand the tools, methods and concepts thoroughly and you will be able to analyze the effectiveness of your choices. You can analytically develop processes in the production. You are capable to produce technically and visually solid material.

Evaluation criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You understand the tools, methods and concepts thoroughly and you will be able to analyze the design choices critically. You can analytically discuss about the concepts and present and defend (based on knowledge and evidence) your opinions. You can point out details about technical issues, visual design and tools/methods used. You can question the presented information and give valid options. You are capable to creatively produce technically solid material, which is visually innovative.
