Objective

The object of the course:
You will continue to learn the basics of the Spanish language and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. By the end of the course, you can use simple phrases and sentences in spoken and written production. You expand your vocabulary and knowledge of language structures needed in everyday situations. You will be able to act in accordance with the norms of Hispanic culture in typical communication situations.

Course competences:
The course prepares and equips you to act and work in an international and multicultural environment.

The learning objectives of the course:
You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may hinder communication. You understand the main points of simple texts on familiar topics, both by reading and by listening. You can write a simple text using the vocabulary and structures studied on the course. Furthermore, you can apply and analyse cultural differences between your home country and Spanish-speaking world.

Starting level: A1.1 Objective: A1.2-A.2 (according to CEFR)

Content

Keep on practising and learning Spanish efficiently! Expand your knowledge and skills in this latter part of the beginners' course. It suits very well for refreshing your skills if you have studied some Spanish earlier.

You will enhance your Spanish language proficiency and understanding. You will acquire the ability to apply both written and spoken Spanish language skills necessary for everyday interactions, along with gaining insight into the unique aspects of Spanish culture and the Hispanic world in general:

Pronunciation

Communication: Describing your life, hobbies, travel, the weather, email, daily tasks, and lifestyle

Grammar: Present perfect (past tense) and common constructions associated with it, object pronouns, ordinal numbers, adverbs, reflexive verbs, continuous form (gerund) for ongoing actions

Cultural awareness: Distinctive aspects of Hispanic culture (focus on Spain and Argentina) and communication practices, knowledge of Spain as a country

The lecturer provides the material for the course. Most of it available only in digital format.

Recommended supplementary material: any Spanish manual, for example an old school book of yours if any.

Teaching methods

Contact course between 11.02. - 13.05.2025 (DDMMYYYY)
Weekly face-to-face lessons at Jamk main campus on Tuesdays at 16:00–18:30.

Lessons, exercises in class and homework on Moodle, learning assignments, tests, final exam.
In order to pass, a minimum of 80% attendance in the lessons is required.

The teaching language of this implementation is English.

Description of required previous studies: for example, Spanish 1 course (5 ECTS) successfully completed at Jamk UAS, or successfully completed Spanish courses 1–3 in a Finnish high school as a B3-language.

Exam schedules

Final exam at the end of the course, on May 13, 2025.

1st resit: 2–3 weeks after the final exam
2nd resit: 2–3 weeks after the 1st resit exam, unless agreed on otherwise with the lecturer.

Content scheduling

Contact lectures every Tuesday at 16-18.30 starting on 11th February 2025.

Weekly contact lessons on Tuesdays from 4pm-6.30pm between 11.2.2025-13.5.2025.

In addition to the face-to-face lectures, the student prepares homework and two assignments. The student is required to independently study on Moodle using the material provided by the teacher.

The teaching language of this implementation is English.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass:
You understand basic expressions from slow and clear speech. You can interact in simple and routine everyday situations, although problems in pronunciation and pauses may affect communication. You understand simple texts on familiar topics. You can write a simple text. There may still be some faltering in the use of vocabulary and language structures.

Fail:
The level of competence does not reach the minimum requirements, or the assignments and exams of the course have not been successfully completed.

NB! If you need a numerical grade (1 - 5), it can be obtained on a separate certificate. The need for a numerical assessment must be communicated to the teacher at the beginning of the course. After the first assessed assignment or test, it is no longer possible to change the grading scale from pass-fail to a numerical scale.

Qualifications

Attained proficiency level A1 as per the European Framework of Reference (CEFR) https://europa.eu/europass/en/common-european-framework-reference-language-skills.

For instance, completion of Spanish for beginners 1 (5 ECTS) or high school B3 language courses 1-3, or equivalent proficiency and understanding.

Further information

The course is well suited for anyone with some basic knowledge in Spanish (level A1.1 of The Common European Reference for Languages) and who would like to continue their Spanish studies. You can also refresh your Spanish skills if you have studied it earlier.
