Evaluation methods and criteria
Successful completion of the course consists of the following components: Reading and studying the materials. Two examinations, each requiring at least 70% correct answers to pass. Each examination may be taken up to three times. The highest score obtained will be recorded. Once the passing threshold of the examinations has been reached, the course will be marked as completed (1 ECTS).

Content scheduling
The course consists of three modules: What is a probe? – The basic concept of the method and its difference from other qualitative research methods. Design and implementation – Key principles and practical tips for designing probe research. Material analysis – How to interpret and utilise the collected data in design.
Objective
Qualitative User Research: Design Probe is an independently completed online course, which introduces the probe method (also known as the cultural probe). The method helps to reveal users’ everyday life, experiences, and meanings to support design.
Content
Module 1: What is a probe? You will learn what a probe is, what it is used for, and how it differs from other qualitative user research methods. Module 2: Design and implementation (opens in January 2026) This module covers the key principles and practical aspects of research design and implementation. Module 3: Data analysis (opens in January 2026) This module focuses on examining the data and how insights gained from the data can be used in design.

Student workload
One credit requires approximately 27 hours of work. About 24 hours are allocated for assignments and a maximum of 3 hours for exam questions.
Qualifications
The course does not cover the fundamentals of qualitative research, so basic competence in qualitative research is recommended.
