Objective
The course is designed as an introduction to pedagogical thinking and the teaching of an instrument. The student is able to reflect on their music pedagogical learning and to build their professional competence. They recognise their own strengths as well as the factors influencing their musical path and learning. The student identifies phenomena of pedagogical interaction and familiarises themselves with various environments for instrumental and vocal teaching. The student is aware of perspectives related to encountering and teaching learners of different ages and diverse backgrounds.

The course is designed as an introduction to pedagogical thinking and the teaching of an instrument. The student identifies phenomena of pedagogical interaction and familiarises themselves with various environments for instrumental and vocal teaching. The student is aware of perspectives related to encountering and teaching learners of different ages and diverse backgrounds. Who is the course intended for? • The course can be completed through the open university of applied sciences by any musician, music pedagogue, secondary-level student or music enthusiast with an interest in the subject. Content: Reflection on one’s own pedagogical path, the values of a music pedagogue, strength-based pedagogy and supporting the learner’s strengths, the tools, competences and field of activity of a music pedagogue, and engaging with learners of different ages.

Online course. Independent completion in Moodle. The course is open from 12 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. The course is divided into modules, which are recommended to be completed in numerical order, as some assignments require knowledge acquired in previous modules. Teaching methods
The course is designed as an introduction to instrument pedagogical thinking and teaching an instrument. No prior pedagogical expertise is required, but in some modules, professional experience or several years of practising or singing is a prerequisite. The course is completed independently. The course is followed by "Insights into Instrument Teaching 2," which is available simultaneously with this course. It is recommended to complete the courses and their modules in numerical order, as some assignments require knowledge acquired in previous modules. Who is the course intended for? • Anyone interested in the subject—musician, music pedagogue, secondary-level student, or music enthusiast—can complete the course via the Open University of Applied Sciences. • This course covers the joint lectures of the autumn semester’s first-year pedagogical studies in the major of instrument or vocal studies in Metropolia’s music degree programme.
