Objective
After the course students are familiar with the specific features of urban East Asia in a global context. In particular, the course provides insights into different strategies for transition towards urban sustainability in East Asia. Students learn to identify and analyse key issues related to urbanisation in East Asia. Furthermore, the course improves students' skills in locating and analyzing new information. Students can choose to write the learning diaries on a specific country, providing a possibility to learn about urban issues in the country of their specialization
Methods of completion
This is an asynchronous online course. The content is divided into modules that are taken according to the given sequence and schedule.
Methods of completion
The course comprises of a general introduction to urban Asia (1 ECTS) and three East Asia related thematic modules (2 ECTS). Students who have taken the "Introduction: urban Asia" in connection with another urban course offerred by the Asia Network, can omit the 1 ECTS part and only take the 2 ECTS Urban East Asia. Taken as: three quizzes, three learning diaries, each 1200-1500 words.
Content
Urbanization is one of the main global trends in the current world. At the same time, cities are becoming important actors vis-à-vis states. For example, cities play an increasingly central role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. In that context, this course deals with cities and sustainable urbanization in China, Japan and South Korea. The course comprises of the following modules: 1) Introduction: urban Asia (1ECTS) 2) Urbanization and governance, focus mainly on China 3) Environmental issues, focus mainly on South Korea 4) Cities going global, focus mainly on Japan Students who want deepen their understanding of urban East Asia can also write an essay (2 ECTS) EAST0157 Urban East Asia, Essay.
Materials
The course materials include recorded online lectures, Canva-slides, obligatory and elective reading materials, and Internet materials.

Basic knowledge about East Asia or urban studies. For example the Asia Network course “Johdatus Itä-Aasiaan” .
