Knowledge and Understanding: The student is unable to demonstrate the basic theoretical and conceptual knowledge. Central concepts of leisure events are not understood.
Transferable skills: None. The student is incapable of understanding the basic theory behind leisure events and has no ability to present is unable to present in writing or orally.
Inadequate 1
Knowledge and Understanding: The student can demonstrate a superficial understanding of theoretical knowledge. The comprehension of central concepts for planning leisure events remains vague or is largely incomplete. The ability to apply the concepts of leisure events is limited in scope and content.
Transferable skills: Negligible. The student is unable to apply the central concepts of leisure events to an applied business scenario; and the student has limited abilities to communicate in English both orally and in written format.
Satisfactory 2
Knowledge and Understanding: The student is able to demonstrate a basic theoretical and conceptual knowledge of leisure events. Most of the central concepts of leisure events can be defined and the student has a rudimentary ability to apply these concepts to leisure events.

Objective
The purpose of this course is to deepen your understanding in tourism industry and especially in leisure events. You will understand the effects of the events on tourism. You will understand the special features of leisure events and learn the planning and implementation process of responsible leisure events both in theory and in practice. By identifying the international structure of leisure events, and different operators both in international and regional level, it is easier for you to make career plans within event industry.

Location and time
The course is offered in Spring 2026 on Rajakatu campus. The full schedule with the topics will be posted on the course Moodle shell and discussed at the first contact lecture.
Materials
The learning materials are based on proprietary information developed by Dr. Blair Baldwin and Dr. Rositsa Röntynen and will be found on Moodle.
A recommended text for the course is Events Management,Second Edition. Glenn A. J. Bowdin
Teaching methods
The teaching methodology employs experiential learning. This means you will learn the skill set required to create and the experiential aspect is that students will collaborate in teams to develop their own plan for an event that excites them. The course encompasses the skill sets of: Idea Generation, Mind's Eye Modelling; Beachhead Targeting and Segmentation; External and Internal Environmental Analysis; Goal Setting; Event Positioning; Integrated Marketing Communications and Sales, Risk Management, Operations Planning, Basic budgeting, as well as Sustainability and Responsibility aspects.

There is one test in this course as part of the individual evaluation. The dates and times will be outlined on the Course syllabus on Moodle.

Event plans developed in this course can be used to build global connection since many event plans can be adapted to other cultures and countries.
