Objective
The students have adequate assessment and decision-making capabilities for working in independent surgery activities of primary health care.
The students make decisions within the limits of their areas of responsibility and consult a doctor and other experts if necessary.
The students meet clients as active participants using adequate client-related education and counselling methods.
The students are able to prevent the risks which weaken functional ability and health.
Content
Individual assessment of treatment needs and referral to treatment.
Assessing the urgency of treatment and drawing the necessary conclusions, recognising infectious diseases and referral to treatment, treatment of minor traumas, monitoring of long-term illnesses, care counseling, prevention of public health problems and assessment of health risks, guiding customers to services, group advice and group surgeries, ethical decision-making, guidance and legal aspects of drug therapy, consultation.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
A: The students manage pharmaceutical calculations correctly and are able to apply pharmacology and safe drug therapy in patient cases in the surgery.
B: The students are able to apply evidence-based knowledge in making nursing decisions. They recognize the responsibility, the role and benefits of nursing in a multiprofessional and multi-expert team and in social and health care services. The students bring up and reflect on ethical questions related to surgery activities and suggest development ideas. The students reflect upon their choices in learning assignments critically and analytically, drawing on relevant and evidence-based multiprofessional knowledge in a versatile manner.
C: The students are able to assess the need for treatment based on preliminary data given by the patient and adequate examinations. The students master the thorough physical examination of a patient and the safe use of associated implements following pre-agreed criteria. The students draw the necessary conclusions and plan further treatment within the limits of their area of responsibility.
Qualifications
The students master basic knowledge, key concepts and methods of social and health care sector customer relationships and setting as well as goals and methods of guidance, health promotion and preventive nursing, and they are familiar with the basic premises of evidence-based decision-making.
