Content scheduling
During contact sessions, the focus is on theoretical content, while calculation exercises are designed to support the learning of theory. Both components progress in parallel, following the course topics throughout the entire study period.
Objective
After completing the course, you will know the operating principles of common component-like machine parts used in mechanical engineering. You will also learn basic dimensioning principles, taking into account the operating conditions of the machine. You are able to select machine parts for their applications with sustainability and responsibility in mind. You will also learn working life project skills and requirements through assignments.
Investigations and information retrieval:
You can analyze and solve technical challenges.
Engineering practice:
You can calculate and select the most common machine components.
Content
The basics and selection of the most common components in machine engineering.
Selected components:
- gears
- power transmission of v-belt and chains
- bearings, slide and rolling bearings,
- couplings and brakes
- springs
Materials

Teaching methods
During contact sessions, the theoretical content of the course will be covered. In addition, students are expected to engage in independent study through calculation exercises. These exercises include mandatory, scheduled submissions and cover all key topic areas of the course.
Exam schedules
Two midterm exams will be held during the course. Students may choose to replace the second midterm with a final exam at the end of the course. In addition, two retake exams will be organized in accordance with JAMK’s guidelines.
Student workload
Lectures 5 times, á 2-3 h.
Calculation exercises which includes self-reliant work 120 h.
Total 135 h.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
There are small exams during the course based on course time schedule. There are no resists of these small exams. At the end of the course there is possibility to choose small exam or exam of the whole course. After this there are 2 resists.
Adequate (1): You can identify the basic knowledge and terminology but can only adequate way to apply them to simple selection and calculating tasks of machine components.
Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but can only satisfactorily apply them to selection and calculating tasks of machine components.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Good (3): You are familiar with the most common machine components, understands their purposes and operation models and can apply the theory for calculating and selection of machine components.
Very good (4): You master the essential knowledge and skills to dimension and select the machine components and understands their purposes and operation models. You master the related theory and can apply the knowledge in an innovative manner to calculating and selection process of the machine components.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent (5): You master the essential knowledge and skills to dimension and select the machine components and understands their purposes and operation models. You master the related theory and can apply the knowledge in an innovative manner to calculating and selection process of the machine components with more complicated methods.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Team work project is compulsory.
Calculation exercises of every topic of the course are also compulsory. Calculation exercises has to be returned based on course time schedule. 2/3 of each topic exercises has to be passed.
Qualifications
- basics of statics
- basics of 3-D modeling
- basics of mechanical drawings
- basics of material technology
Further information
Assessment is based on midterm exams or a final exam. Students can improve their grade by submitting a certain number of homework assignments beyond the minimum required.
