Objective

Purpose of the course:
You will be able to determine the normal loads on structures (dead load, payloads, natural loads), the frame systems of buildings and know how they work. You can explain the most common methods of stiffening the frame and apply them in different situations, you know the types of vertical and horizontal load-bearing structures in different types of structures. You know the obligations and structural requirements for the construction of civil engineering shelters. You will be familiar with the descriptive methods and drawing symbols used in building and structural design, and will know the key issues in structural design. These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding: knowledge and understanding of the engineering sciences underlying the design of your own structures at the level required to achieve the other learning outcomes of the programme.
Communication and teamwork: the ability to function effectively as an individual and as a team member.
Interdisciplinary skills: Ability to take responsibility for group learning and sharing of learning.
Practical application of technology: Ability to apply technical standards and established guidelines for professional practices in one's field.

Course objective:
You will be able to determine the normal loads on structures (dead weight, live loads, natural loads), the frame systems of buildings and know how they work. You will be able to explain the most common methods of stiffening the frame and apply them in different situations, you will know the types of vertical and horizontal load-bearing structures in different types of structures. You know the regulations and guidelines for structural sound insulation and how to apply them. You know the obligations and structural requirements for the construction of shelters for the general public. You will be familiar with the descriptive methods and drawing symbols used in building and structural design and the key issues in structural design.
These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Student workload

One credit point means an average of 27 hours of work. The load is distributed in different ways depending on the way the course is implemented.
-------------------
In this study period, time use and workload is distributed as follows:

- Lectures 18 h
- Independent Work 117 h.
( including among others: Learning assignments, Home Works, preparing for Test)
- Total 135 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Intermediate (1): The student knows and recognises the topics described in the objectives of the course and is able to perform the tasks according to the objectives of the course: types of frames, loads on structures, methods of stiffening of structures, basics of structural design, technical documents, structural sound insulation, shelters for the general public.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows, identifies and understands the issues described in the learning objectives of the course. The student can demonstrate competence by describing the topics covered in the course in a systematic way.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course and is able to demonstrate his/her knowledge in a clear and understandable way. The student is able to articulate the learning in a clear and concise manner and to apply it to practical tasks.

Excellent (4). The student is able to describe the effects of different solutions and to make informed choices between alternatives.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Erinomainen (5): Opiskelija on saavuttanut opintojakson osaamistavoitteet erinomaisesti. Lisäksi opiskelija kykenee tarkastelemaan opintojakson aiheita teoreettisesti ja käytännössä kriittisesti soveltaen. Osaaminen osoitetaan johdonmukaisesti ja moniulotteisesti.

Qualifications

Basics of building construction; building materials, conventional structures (detached house)
