Content scheduling

Every week there is lecturing or project help, every three weeks project work at the campus lab.

Objective

You are able to manage large and complicated PLC- based automation systems. You can independently solve problems in existing systems and systems being developed.

EUR-ACE ENGINEERING PRACTICE
You are able to implement control applications using programmable logic and process control systems. You are able to select and use appropriate equipment, tools and methods. You are able to combine theory and practice to solve engineering problems in PLC projects. You have an understanding of applicable techniques and methods and of their limitations.

EUR-ACE COMMUNICATION AND TEAM-WORKING
You have ability to communicate effectively information, ideas, problems and solutions with the engineering community in a national and an international context. You have ability to function effectively as an individual and as a member of a team and as an entrepreneurship.

Location and time

Spring 2025
Contact lectures and lab work after every three weeks at the main campus every. Shorter online lectures.

Materials

Häkkinen, V-M. 2020. Programmable Logic Controllers. Course material. JAMK, technology.

Teaching methods

Automation software engineering is problem-oriented and therefore problem based learning is also used as a learning method. It takes place through contact hours, project work and independent work.

Employer connections

Work-related project

Exam schedules

Evaluation discussion in project return. There is no exam.

Completion alternatives

The course includes exercises and laboratory work related to automation hardware design. The procedures for assessment are described in the examination regulations and the study guide. The course tutor will provide further information on any specific procedures for the course.

Student workload

Lectures and project work 100 h, independent study 35 h, minimum total 135 hours work for student

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient (1): You identify the basic knowledge, terminology and team-working skills but in the interpreting of the essential concepts the skills are still inadequate.

Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge, terminology and team-working skills but it’s challenging to use them in solving the problems.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): You can manage complicated PLC projects as a team member. Your skills are needed and used to get the project done.

Very good (4): You master the essential PLC knowledge and can apply it. Your skills are helping the whole team.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You master the essential knowledge and can apply the knowledge acquired in a creative and innovative manner. The project team would not manage as well without your skills.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The course includes exercise and laboratory work related to automation hardware, software and HMI design. In the course you learn how to build your own project with Siemens TIA Portal, how to configure devices and control them with logic. You also learn how to use PID-controls, frequency converters, Profibus and other common process automation objects.

Qualifications

PLC basic skills and knowledge

Further information
