Content scheduling
The recommended course schedule can be found on the workspace tab Start here.
Objective
Course purpose
During this course you rehearse and reinforce mathematical knowledge and skills needed in the beginning of your studies.
Course competences
EUR-ACE: Knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and understanding of the mathematics and other basic sciences underlying their engineering specialisation, at a level necessary to achieve the other programme outcomes.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course you recall basic algebraic operations and rules for numbers and symbols, and formulas related to common geometric shapes. You understand the difference between an expression and an equation. You are able to apply what you have learned to solve simple problems related to your own field of study.
Content
Basic algebraic operations, the notion of square root, rules for exponents, simplification of polynomial expressions and simple rational expressions, simple linear and quadratic polynomial equations, percentages, simple geometry and trigonometry for right triangles, basics of functions, verbal problems.
Location and time
The course workspace will open on September 19th for course familiarization.
The course begins on September 24th with a presentation of the course at the course Zoom address. The presentation can later be viewed on a recording, the address of which will appear on the front page of the Moodle-workspace.
The course ends on November 3th.
The final exams for this implementation will take place at the main campus on November 4th at 17:30 - 19:00.
In the final exam, a scratch paper is allowed, but formulas, electronic formulas, calculators or calculator programs and artificial intelligence are not allowed. More detailed instructions can be found on the Final exam tab in the workspace.
Materials
The material is in the learning environment, and it consists of files, videos, exercises by pen and paper and automatic tests.
Teaching methods
NOTICE! This implementation is an elective course for prospective students aiming to become engineers in logistics through multimodal studies. Other students will be directed to other implementations of the corresponding course.
This course is a web-based, self-directed course in a Moodle environment. There are no contact lessons on this course. The final exam will take place on the main campus, however, and it is not possible to attend it remotely.
Online guidance for use of the environment in Zoom on September 24th at 17:00 - 18:00 (a recording will be available afterwards)
Online guidance for the final exam in Zoom on October 20 at 17:00 - 18:00 (a recording will be available afterwards)

Exam schedules
When you get enough points for the automatically scored practice test assignments and you have also completed the booklet assignments, you will have access to the pass tests. The time of the pass test is limited to one hour. You can take each pass test three times.
Pass tests must be passed before the final examination. Register for the final exam in advance no later than November 2nd In Moodle, on the tab Final exam and course feedback!
Completion alternatives
There are no alternative ways to complete the course.
Student workload
Independent work 79 h, exam 2 h.
When the course lasts about 6 weeks and there are 6 topics to cover, 13 hours are available for one subject area.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
You are able to simplify simple polynomial- and rational expressions and evaluate expressions numerically. You recognise the difference between an expression and an equation. You can explain how simplifying an expression differs from the process of solving an equation. You are able to solve simple linear and quadratic polynomial equations. You can solve the edges and angles of right triangles. You can solve simple problems with equations. You know the notation for functions, are able to read the values of a function from a graph, and compute values of a given function using the functions expression. You recognise the equation of a line, are able to draw the line by using it, and you can determine the equation of a line from a picture.
Further information
The maximum score for the course is 100 points, which consists of three self-paced tests (maximum 36 points) taken before the final exam, and a final exam taken at Jamk's main campus, maximum 64 points.
Students are ranked based on the scores they achieved, with the highest score first.
