Objective

The student is able to independently plan, implement and evaluate the health counseling and care of a pregnant woman and a family with children and young. An empowering orientation, family orientation and family's health promotion are emphasized in his/her activities and promoting breastfeeding, early interaction. The student is able to support and counsel families in the promotion of sexual health and in family planning. S/he masters the health care-related surveillance and care methods of a pregnant woman and the fetus. The student recognizes complications during pregnancy and, together with a team, s/he is responsible for their treatment. S/he supports and counsels families in parenthood and in their growth as parents. The student has a good command of family and empowerment oriented methods of child health care and health promotion.
The student is able to critically analyze his/her knowledge and skills related to the health, health risks and disorders of school-aged children and adolescents. S/he has internalized an empowering approach as part of his/her work among school-aged children, young people, and their families. S/he masters evidence-based health care practices among school-aged children and adolescents. S/he has developed the abilities required for a high quality and development-oriented approach in work life.
The student is able to assess the factors promoting and risking the health of working-aged people and help his/her clients to promote their health and coping at work. S/he recognizes the key risk factors involved in work, as well as their health impact. S/he is able to work as a professional of occupational health care in compliance with good occupational health care practice.

Content

Health examination, pregnancy surveillance, and empowering health counselling and guidance. Family training and group activity. Baby friendly approach and breast feeding training. Supporting parenthood and early bonding. Planning, implementation, evaluation and development of sexual health promotion. Multi-expertise and networks in family health promotion.
The objectives and methods in school and student health care, the wellbeing of a school community, the health profile of a school-aged child and adolescent, career selection and health, cooperation and networking, the functions of student health care and the role of a public health nurse, the healthiness of a school/study environment, the quality and development of school/student health care
Orientation to occupational health care operations: a changing and developing working life, Occupational Health Care Act and Decree.
The basics of occupational health care expertise: occupational health care work in accordance with good practice of the field, ethical principles and data security.
The health impact of work, recognition and prevention of risk factors: workplace analysis and visit. Risk assessment: work hygiene factors, physical and mental stress, workplace ergonomics and first-aid preparedness, nursing in occupational health care. Maintenance and promotion of function and work ability: health examinations and screenings, rehabilitation and employment pension systems for working-aged people. Operating in work community.
Evaluation methods and promotion of the different fields of health and functional capacity of aging people.

Qualifications

The student masters the basics of nursing and has theoretical and clinical competency in the fields of health promotion, nursing related to national health concerns, families and communities, and s/he is able to operate in different health care settings.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Excellent (5) The student has mastered the knowledge base of public health nursing and is able to examine it from various perspectives. He/she is able to use current information and communication technology to acquire, edit, produce and communicate information. In interactive situations, he/she is able to use and present information in a structured and instructive manner.
The student has good skills in public health nursing, which he/she is able to draw on in various situations. He/she has excellent competences in health promotion, public health nursing of individuals, families, groups and communities, and environmental health promotion. He/she knows how he/she should develop his/her skills in the future. The student demonstrates skills above the basic requirements of his/her current stage of studies and continually improving competence in public health nursing.
The student enthusiastically and constructively embraces responsibility for promoting health and wellbeing and is motivated to develop his/her competence and public health nursing. He/she is able to act in an entrepreneurial and ethical manner while planning and organising his/her actions. He/she works interactively and constructively and develops his/her area of expertise.
