Objective

You are familiar with the elementary level music theory and practice in Basic Education in the Arts. You are familiar with the curriculum, lesson planning, different teaching methods and evaluation. You are familiar with the teacher´s work in music theory and practice. You are able to use various teaching methods.

Content

You learn lesson planning, student evaluation methods and general planning from the teachers perspective regarding the work of music theory and practice teacher. You learn to know current teaching methods and learning materials. You are able to plan and put into practice different kind of music productions (also as a co-work). You learn to reflect your own work as a teacher.

Location and time

Lectures on Tuesdays at 12.30 pm untin 2 pm.
The practice period times to be agreed upon with teacher.

Teaching methods

Englanniksi
In this study module you participate in lectures (10 x 90 min per semester),
do assignments given by the teacher and follow other musical elements classes (12 lessons).
The course is arranged by contact studying method.

The practise period in teaching (12 lessons) is done by teaching Gradia basic education groups.
The course can be accomplished also without the practise period.

Practice period 4 credits

Prioritization of the student selection is made due to overall completion of the attendees Music Pedagogy study program. The spots are prioritized on students who are about to graduate in the following year or year and a half.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Evaluation of portfolio: guiding teacher's evaluation, comparative evaluation, self-evaluation.

Pass: You know the basic principles and materials of elementary level music teaching. You recognise the methods and the challenges in the work field. You have the skills to plan your work and teach music theory and practice groups over a long span. You are able to present in orderly manner your own view of the main features regarding group teaching based on your experience, on the existing sources and on your skills at the moment.

Qualifications

You are familiar with the basics of music education and understand the diverse conceptions connected with music learning. You understand the significance of curriculum as a foundation of teaching. You are familiar with the music school system and team work. You are capable of developing reflective teaching attitudes and you understand the principles of portfolio work.
