Content scheduling

The course is initially theory-oriented, after which the focus is on doing practical work in project groups in the computer class. An assembly lab will be arranged separately, which will be carried out in groups. The final presentations are held in groups according to a separate schedule. Everyone participates in the performances, both the performing group and other students.

Objective

The importance of services is remarkable in post-industrial societies. However, manufacturing companies are the pillars of national economies. In a global world, management and understanding of production and supply chains are at the heart of the expertise of a logistics engineer. In whichever position you are working in a production and supply chain, you must have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and requirements of production.

In this course you will learn
- to know the impact of production planning and control on production management
- understand the entities and correlations of your decisions
- understand the potential of modern management methods as factor of a productivity
- apply the relationship between product structures, item control analysis and production planning for sales, production control, and inventory management
- look for possible suppliers and partnerships
- manage risks, make decisions and work in a group

After completing the course, you will have wide understanding of the terminology of the topics covered by the course and the links between them. You will get a wide perspective into the design requirements and implementation of production, and the impact of different production strategies on customer relationship management. You will gain understanding about financial management and learn to manage production from that perspective as well.

Competences: business knowledge, engineering practice, communication and team-working.

Learning outcome:
You understand the terminology of technical production and production economics and the capabilities of different production systems. You will know the key concepts and theories related to production management.

Content

The course covers the following main themes:
- Production control and timing
- Item control and apply
- Material management in production network
- Productivity thinking and modern management methods
- Cost calculation of production and financial management of production company

Materials

Chapman S. The Fundamentals of Production Planning and Control, Uusi-Rauva ym. Teollisuustalous, Case material, Excel-data and T-forms + lecture material.

Teaching methods

The implementation of the course is divided into two parts: to support the competence, key concepts and phenomena related to production management are reviewed. The central entity is an extensive exercise related to the course, in which the key functions of a production company are planned in accordance with a separate assignment, including economic management related to its launch and production management, in addition to technical choices and decisions.

The course does not have a separate traditional exam. The actual evaluation is based on the project report and the workload evaluation form returned by the students at the end of the study period, which has both a self-evaluation field and general evaluation criteria listed to support the evaluation.

Exam schedules

There is no separate individual exam in this course. Learning and competence are assessed with the help of practice work.

International connections

The study case aims for the international market.

Completion alternatives

The implementation of the study course is based to a significant extent on doing practice work as group work. If implemented in another way, the knowledge produced by the study course would probably remain empty.

Student workload

The calculated load of the course is 135 hours. The literature and lecture material are intended both for learning new things and for applying them as support for practice work. From the middle of the course, practical work is also done in contact classes, when the teacher's role becomes consulting. Students are responsible for their activities in their project group, which promotes teamwork skills.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1: Student has gained knowledge at all the subjects described in the learning outcomes.

2: Student has gained knowledge at all the subjects described in the learning outcomes and is able to utilize this knowledge.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

3: Student understands all the subjects described in the learning outcomes and is able to apply the skills he or she has learned.

4: Student has attained an excellent level in almost all the subjects described in the learning outcomes and is able to apply the skills he or she has learned.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

5: The student has attained an excellent level in all subjects described in the learning outcomes and is able to apply the skills he or she has learned.

Qualifications

Materials management. Production- and materials technology. Financial studies. Other engineering studies.

Further information

Oppimisen arviointi on osaamistavoitteisiin pohjautuvaa, laadullista, kriteeriperusteista ja siinä opiskelijan itsearvioinnilla ryhmän arvion ohella on tärkeä rooli.
