Objective

Purpose of the course
In this course you will learn to enable occupation and participation of working age and elderly clients. Compensation can be used in occupational therapy in order to enable clients occupation and participation. Teaching and guiding can be used in order to strengthen skills and body functions needed in occupations. Meaningful and purposeful activities are used in occupational therapy. These activities are analyzed and adapted to be used goal directed. Chosen methods are used based on good practices and research evidence. You will learn aspects of neuropsychology from the point of view of the occupational therapy client.

Competences
Knowledge of occupational therapy
Professional autonomy and accountability

Learning outcomes
You are able to recognize the key problems of occupation especially among those of working age and the elderly (e.g. mental health, stroke, progressive illnesses). You can explain the challenges in occupation and participation experienced by the client and observed by the therapist. You understand and describe compensation, skill acquisition, restoration and teaching as the main methods in occupational therapy in order to support and enable client occupation, experience and participation. You can choose, combine and adapt different intervention procedures in order to enable and enhance client´s occupation. You base your choices in research evidence, occupational therapy theory and models, as well as occupational performance analysis.

Content

In this course you study the typical occupational challenges related to working age and senior clients as well as the aspects affecting client factors, environments and occupation. You will get to know occupational therapy theories and evidence based models and approaches. This course focuses on occupation based skills training and client factors restoration. You will learn how to adapt occupations according to the goals of the client. You will learn basics of neuropsychology.

Location and time

Contact days at Jamkin Dynamo or Rajakatu campus. The course includes small group work, so please reserve a small group place for yourself at the registration stage (if you have not done so, the teacher will assign a small group).

Teaching methods

The course is based on flipped learning, i.e. you come prepared for all learning situations. The learning situations are interactive learning situations on campus with compulsory attendance. In addition, students will work individually and/or in small groups on learning tasks. A larger group learning assignment, progressing throughout the course, will be assessed as a Case Study style assignment.

The course consists of 6 credits of occupational therapy for adult somatic rehabilitation (e.g. neurological clients), 3 credits of occupational therapy for mental health clients and 1 credit of neuropsychology as a separate module.

Exam schedules

Completion dates Revision of learning tasks according to the dates defined in the module. Several of the learning tasks to be assessed must be done with the group in the course timetable.

Neuropsychology module exam open during the time specified in the module mode of the course.

Student workload

Preparation for learning situations 73h
Learning situations 100 h (obligatory)
Learning tasks 70h
Exam (includes preparation) 27h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1
