Objective

Aim of the course:
The aim of the course is practising the initiation of a goal-oriented occupational therapy process based on therapeutic interaction and exploring how it progresses and supports the client's inclusion and participation.

Learning Outcome:
You familiarise yourself with a working method compliant with the principles of a person-centered and client-centric approach and practise building a therapeutic rapport on which the occupational therapy process is based. You are able to explain what the concept of interprofessionality means, and you participate in guidance situations of clients, families or team members to enable occupation and participation. You examine the concepts of occupational therapy in the context of working life. You are able to examine the client's occupation and the factors that affect it using the key concepts of occupational therapy, occupational science and rehabilitation, and you know how to describe their manifestations in the client's daily life. You get to know the phases of the occupational therapy process in practical work and know how to describe the phases of a client's occupational therapy process in the context of your placement. You familiarise yourself with one assessment method used in occupational therapy and examine its reliability and usability.

Content

The key content of the course comprises operating as a member of the work community in an occupational therapy work environment and participating in the guidance of the learning process together with a workplace supervisor and a teacher mentor from the university of applied sciences.

Location and time

The course takes place at an internship site arranged by the student at a time agreed upon with the internship site.

Teaching methods

The course takes place in the workplace in an occupational therapist's working environment, project, project or in an internship that supports entrepreneurship.
The course consists of hours worked in the placement (300h) and pre-placement activities such as placement search (24h). During the placement, the student will be assigned a teacher mentor from Jamk and a work-life mentor and learning will be supported by regular learning discussions during the placement.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student has familiarised themselves with a working method based on person-centered and client-centric principles in the occupational therapist’s work and practised establishing a therapeutic rapport with a client. The student is able to describe what multiagency means as a concept and has participated in guidance situations with clients, families or team members. The student remembers some key concepts of occupational therapy and is able to describe the client's occupation and the factors affecting it, using key concepts of occupational therapy, occupational science and rehabilitation. The student has familiarised themselves with the different phases of the occupational therapy process and is able to describe the progress of this process in the context of their placement. They have got to know one assessment method used in occupational therapy, its reliability and its usability.

Qualifications

You need an understanding of the theories and models that guide the occupational therapist's work relating to the occupational therapy process and therapeutic interaction. You need to have an idea of how occupation and participation are assessed in occupational therapy.

Further information

During the course, the student sets personal learning goals in collaboration with the supervising teacher and the workplace supervisor. The student is supported in achieving these goals by both the supervising teacher and the workplace supervisor throughout the course. At the end of the course, the achievement of the goals is assessed on a pass - fail scale.
