Objective

The purpose of the course is to learn the basics of planning and implementing a goal-oriented service counselling process that supports the client's participation and resources.

Learning outcomes:

You will note that diversity, accessibility, equality and equal opportunities are implemented in service counselling. You promote the status of vulnerable individuals and communities and strive for social empowerment.

You can implement service counselling comprehensively by utilizing information about the service system, services and opportunities. You understand the importance of service counselling and are able to apply appropriate legislation in service counselling. You are able to act as an expert in network cooperation and develop service counselling in a client-oriented and multidisciplinary manner.

You are able to implement and document service counselling in a client-oriented manner and in accordance with client safety in the digital and other operating environments. You are able to plan, implement, evaluate and manage service processes that support customer participation, resources and security in cooperation with the client, close relatives and a multidisciplinary network of professionals. You are able to monitor, evaluate and promote the quality and effectiveness of service counselling through information.

Content

The main content of the course includes the concept of service counselling, theoretical and ethical foundations, key legislation on service counselling, documentation, service counselling models, service counselling in different settings with different client groups and client safety, quality, development and effectiveness of service counselling.

Teaching methods

The course is entirely taught face-to-face.

In face-to-face learning days, you will learn about the theories, models and principles of case management through lectures, discussions and small group work. You will also learn about the theories of service orientation by completing an independent online assignments in the Moodle workspace. In the group assignment, you will apply the information you have learned in the webinars to the planning and implementation of a goal-oriented case management process that supports client involvement and resources.

The learning method used in the course is problem-based learning. As a learning task, you will reflect, gather material and apply the knowledge together with your group to describe a service pathway for a sample person. At the end of the course, you and your group will present the final result to other students and teachers. In this way, we will learn together how to implement service guidance in different life situations.

Learning days will create the conditions and basis for building service pathway descriptions. Therefore, it is important that you participate in each learning day, because there will also be time for group work. In the groups, each member is a responsible actor, so you should contribute equally to your group and actively participate as a member of your group also during the independent work.

In the learning days you will receive guidance and support for your work and progress on the course. If necessary, you can also communicate with your teachers in the Moodle workspace discussion area.

The work-life context is connected to case studies, produced in the context of development projects carried out together with working life.
Whenever possible, there may be expert presentations.

Exam schedules

The course does not include an exam.
There is a possibility to complete a group assignment.
There is no limit to the number of times you can complete the online assignments independently.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You identify the theoretical background and concepts of service counselling. You can describe the ethical principles of service counselling. Identify the possibilities of applying legislation in service counselling. You can describe the importance of documentation in the implementation of client-oriented service counselling. You identify different models of service guidance. You can describe ways of implementing client-centered service guidance in different settings. You are able to identify factors related to the quality and effectiveness of service counselling.

Qualifications

You can describe the social and health care service system and name the laws that govern it. You can explain what client participation and agency in the service system means and what values and principles guide the service system.

Further information

Passing is based on participation in learning days and successful completion of an independent online assignments and a group assignment. The group assignment will include a peer assessment as part of the overall assessment. The group assignment and the independent web assignments will be assessed on the basis of separate assessment criteria, which will be announced at the beginning of the course in the Moodle work space.
The group assignment will be assessed on a pass/fail scale.
The pass thresholds for the online assignments to be completed independently are indicated in the Moodle workspace in the assignments. There is no limit to the number of times the assignment can be completed.

Approval policy: A decision on the possible approval of the course must be made before the first webinar of the course, as the group work on the learning task will already start in the first day on campus. Applications for accreditation must demonstrate competence in relation to the objectives and content of the course.
