Objective

The students command voice leading fluently and are able to re-harmonize melodies in a creative and many-sided manner. They are able to arrange music according to style for the regular pop/jazz-ensembles, keeping in mind the characteristics of the instruments used. If need be, the students are able to write accompanying lines and additional arranging parts to pop/jazz pieces.

VOICE LEADING

REHARMONIZATION
• diatonic and mediantic reharmonization
• reharmonization of tonic and subdominant chords
• reharmonization of cadential areas
• control of bass lines and chromaticism
• deceptive resolutions and free reharmonization

HARMONIZATION OF MELODY
• two- to three-part harmony
• counter-melodies, obbligato lines and riffs
• four- to five-part sectional harmony (melody-derived, harmony-derived, and linear)

INSTRUMENTATION
• writing for pop/jazz band instruments
• writing for strings, wind instruments, and the human voice
• instrument range, transposition, and special characteristics

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass (S):
The students make natural and style- faithful arrangements for diverse ensembles. They show in their arrangements their understanding of the following concepts and arranging techniques:
- voice leading
- re-harmonization
- melody harmonization
- instrumentation

The studens are able to obtain, handle and evaluate their acquired knowledge critically. They assume responsibility of their own and the group's learning and follows given directions.

Fail (0):
The students fail to achieve the minimum requirements necessary for passing.
