Objective
Purpose of the course:
The knowledge and skills in this course will enable you to determine stresses and displacements in structures. You will also gain the basic knowledge and skills needed to design structures made of different materials.
Course competences:
Knowledge and understanding of the mathematical and scientific foundations of your technical specialisation at the level required to achieve the other learning objectives of the programme.
Practical application of engineering: Practical skills to implement complex engineering designs.
Course objective:
Understand the relationship between stress and strain in materials. You will be able to determine the displacement and stresses in structures and to design structures for shear, compression, tension, torsion and bending loads. You will be able to determine the deflection of a compressed slender rod. Know when combinations of stresses occur in a structure and be able to perform the associated analysis. The above are the basic tasks of the course.
Content
Determination of stresses, determination of deflections and displacements with formulas, buckling, buckling, buckling, basics of combined stress, basics of structural design, deflections with tables.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
Intermediate (1): The student knows and recognises the topics described in the course objectives and is able to perform the tasks described in the course objectives: determination of stresses in a steel structure from N, Q and M loads, displacements, buckling and hyperstatic structures.
Satisfactory (2): The student knows, identifies and understands the issues described in the unit objectives. The student can demonstrate competence by describing the topics covered in the course in a systematic way.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Good (3): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course and is able to demonstrate his/her knowledge in a clear and understandable way. The student is able to articulate the learning in a clear and concise manner and to apply it to practical tasks.
Excellent (4). The student is able to describe the effects of different solutions and to make informed choices between alternatives.

Excellent (5): the student has achieved the learning objectives of the course with excellent results. In addition, the student is able to examine the topics of the course theoretically and apply them critically in practice. Competence is demonstrated in a coherent and multidimensional manner.
