Objective
Object of the course:
The knowledge and skills you get on this course you will need in order to be able to design and implement foundations, trenches and retaining walls. You will also need these skills, when you study ground and rock works.

The learning objectives of the course:
You can tell the most important legislation related to groundwork as well as foundation types of buildings used in Finland. You can tell how the soil features influence to the selection of foundation type. You are able to define the size of a footing based on loads and earth parameters. You can design the frost protection for foundations. You can tell about building trenches and fillings and you are aware of their safety factors also as winter work. You know the mechanisms and types of damage to the foundations, as well as the most common methods of repairing the base structures. You can tell the basic principles of fixing the foundations.
These are also the basic tasks of the course.

Earth pressure, earth load capacity, geotechnical survey, Methods for Foundation, Building Trenches, Dimensioning for Frost, Foundation in cold circumstances, Methods for repairing Foundations, Dimensioning of Footing.

Passable (1): The student recognizes all of the learning objectives, understands the meaning of them and is able to perform the basic tasks described in the learning objectives of the course.
Satisfying (2): In addition to previous skills, the student can systematically describe the issues of the course.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
Good (3): In addition to previous skills, the student can describe the influences of various solutions and can make reasoned choices between alternatives.
Laudable (4): In addition to previous skills, the student can apply the learned issues independently and is able to evaluate done solutions.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent ( 5 ): In addition to previous skills, the student shows deep knowledge of course contents as well as ability to parse and wider analyze the influences of solutions.

The course is part of studies that belong to qualifications of civil engineer (Ministry of the Environment guidelines on the difficulty classes of design tasks YM1/601/2015)
The studies follow guidelines of curriculum performed in cooperation with Universities of applied sciences and construction industry in 2017.
