Objective

You will learn about power distribution automation and relay protection technology, which are key areas in ensuring the operation and safety of the electricity network. This course requires prior knowledge of electrical power engineering. Upon completion of this course, you will be prepared to work as a designer in distribution network companies or industrial electrification projects.

EUR-ACE MULTIDISCIPLINARY EXPERTISE

You will be able to design, implement, test and maintain automation and relay protection systems in the electricity network that enable smart, efficient and reliable electricity distribution. You will be familiar with various automation solutions such as SCADA systems, remote control, remote monitoring and remote metering. You will be able to use ICT technologies and IoT solutions for power grid automation. You will be able to select appropriate relay protection devices and settings for different situations and test the operation of protection and measurement.

You can work in a multi-dimensional and changing work environment in the electricity sector, where continuous development of skills and creation of new innovations are required. You understand the strong impact of the electricity sector on safety, the environment and the economy, and the great responsibility of the actors in the sector. You are able to communicate effectively and work in a team with experts in different fields.

Automation and control of electricity distribution
SCADA systems
Communication bus technologies for automation systems
Configuration of SCADA systems
Main power distribution components (circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, instrument transformers)
Relay protection
Various protection functions (overload, over-voltage, undervoltage, earth fault, short circuit, phase sequence, frequency, distance, differential and arc protection)
Configuration of relay protection
Calculation of fault currents and protection configurations in the electrical network
Testing of instrument transformers, control circuits and relay protection

Qualifications

Fundamentals of telecommunications engineering, fundamentals of automation engineering (e.g. function block programming, logical operations) and basic knowledge and design skills in electrical power engineering
