Objective

Purpose of the course:
After completing this course, you will have learned how to use carbon and water footprint calculators and how to use the latest statistics and research on greenhouse gas emissions in Finland and other countries. You will also have learned about good offset practices in voluntary greenhouse gas offsetting. You will be able to act responsibly towards water in your professional field and understand the importance of ecosystem services.

Competence goal:
You know the effects of climate change on people and the environment. You know the risks associated with the use of water resources and know how to act responsibly. You know the basics of carbon footprint calculation and you know which factors affect the water footprint of different products. You know the principles of voluntary compensation of greenhouse gas emissions. You know the importance of ecosystem services for the well-being of people and nature.

Content

The contents of the course include the effects of climate change, carbon footprint, voluntary compensation of greenhouse gas emissions, water responsibility, water footprint and ecosystem services. You will also learn about the use of carbon and water footprint calculators.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient 1:
You know the effects of climate change and water scarcity on people and the environment. You know the carbon and water footprints of different products, the principles of voluntary compensation of greenhouse gas emissions and the importance of ecosystem services.

Satisfactory 2:
You understand the effects of climate change and water scarcity on people and the environment. You can describe the carbon and water footprints of different products, the principles of voluntary compensation for greenhouse gas emissions and the importance of ecosystem services.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good 3:
You can explain the effects of climate change and water scarcity on people and the environment. You can apply information about the carbon and water footprints of different products, voluntary compensation for greenhouse gas emissions, and ecosystem services.

Commendable 4:
You can analyze information about the effects of climate change and water scarcity on people and the environment. You know how to compare the carbon and water footprints of different products and you know how to illustrate voluntary compensation of greenhouse gas emissions and the importance of ecosystem services.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent 5:
You can draw conclusions about the effects of climate change and water scarcity on people and the environment. You can critically evaluate the carbon and water footprints of different products, as well as information on voluntary compensation of greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem services.

Further information

If necessary, a short course of 1-2 ECTS credits related to water responsibility and water footprint can be detached from this course to the provision of continuous learning.
