Objective

The purpose of the course is to increase your understanding of the challenges of education, development, and learning of children under school age and how to support them in early childhood education in a multidisciplinary cooperation.

Learning outcomes:

You are aware of the three levels of support and recognize the values and ethical principles underlying the work in early childhood education. You are able to consider individual support needs in a professionally ethical way. You are able to promote equality, equity and diversity and to act in situations of value conflict in an ethically justified and socially sustainable way.

You are able to theoretically identify, structure and describe various individual factors challenging learning and development in children under school age. You are able to plan, implement and evaluate goal-oriented activities according to individual needs. You recognize the importance of educational cooperation with families in supporting child development and learning.

Content

The main content of the course is to examine the diversity of growth, development and learning of children under school age, as well as the individual variation associated with it. The course provides basic readiness to observe and structure special guidance needs and to apply research-based pedagogical methods in a child-oriented manner.

During the course, knowledge will be gained about the legislation that guides development and supports learning in early childhood education: the basics of the early childhood education plan, the basics of the preschool curriculum, and a working approach based on the inclusion principle and resource-based thinking.

Qualifications

You know the basic principles of work in early childhood education and you recognise the stages of development of children under school age.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

You are able to describe the special characteristics of the growth, development and learning of a child under school age, as well as the needs of support from the perspectives of action and inclusion in everyday life. You can promote equality, equity and diversity and act in situations of value conflict in an ethically sound and socially sustainable way. You will identify individual support needs and be able to name the most common forms of pedagogical support in early childhood education. You are able to implement and plan activities taking into account the needs of support and forms of support. You are able to interact professionally with families in matters related to development and learning support.
