Objective

The purpose of the course
After attending this course, you will know how food is produced in the field in Finland. You will get to know different crops and production inputs to get an overall idea of arable farming.

Course competence
You know the characteristics of Finnish arable farming and you are familiar with the regulations of production. You can define different production methods. You will understand the role of arable farming as part of food production and the circular economy. You know the principles of cultivation and you can apply your knowledge of plant growth factors to arable farming, utilizing various production inputs with the goal of a good yield in terms of both quantity and quality. You know how to consider the environment in arable farming. You know the characteristics of different crops from the point of view of cultivation and crop use. You know the biology of different groups of pests so that you can take them into account in your farming activities. You can make a germination test for cereals and calculate the required amount of seed. You identify the growth rates of cereals by knowing what cultivation measures can be taken at different growth rates. You will identify the most important crops and their seeds.

Content

Basics of agriculture: different production methods, cultivation conditions in Finland, production regulations in the field, field water management, cultivability of soil types, land structure, determination of fertility, use of various soil improvers and fertilizers, basics of plant protection, environmental effects of arable farming . Identification of crops and their seeds.

Teaching methods

It is a completely online implementation, in which case the learning environment supports independent learning. In a learning environment, students study through videos and written material while doing assignments. The course involves exercises that can be completed with tools typically found at home. The student receives feedback on each task done.

The student knows the characteristics of different crops from the perspective of cultivation and crop use. The student knows the biology of different pest groups so that he can take them into account in cultivation activities. The student is able to determine the germination of cereals and calculate the required amount of seed. The student knows the growth rates of cereals, knowing what cultivation measures can be taken at different growth rates. The student identifies crops and their seeds at an adequate level. Exercises have been approved, but they contain shortcomings.

Satisfactory 2:
The student knows the characteristics of Finnish arable farming and is acquainted with the regulations of production. The student is able to define different production methods. The student understands the role of arable farming as part of food production and the circular economy. The student is familiar with the environmental impact of arable farming.
