Objective

After completing this course, you will understand the importance of product development for the success of a company. You will learn about the impact of product development on the environment and society, taking into account the principles of sustainable development. In the product development phase, the most significant decisions are made during the product's life cycle, how the product binds energy and natural resources during its life cycle, and how the product is phased out in a controlled and predictable manner through recycling.

You will get the impression that product development is a systematic and process-like activity, starting with customer needs and ending with successful products through product conceptualization. You are also aware of the importance of product protection as part of the operations of a successful company. During the course, you will develop your cooperation skills as an active member of a product development team and also as a possible team leader.

Engineering practice:
You can use appropriate methods in a product development process and develop complicated products, processes and systems.

Multidisciplinary competences:
You will be able to make objective decisions by comparing complex technical and economic solutions, taking into account sustainable development.

Communication and team-working:
You can work as a team member in a productive way. You can do co-operation with your engineer colleagues and bring out your ideas on troubleshooting cases.

Product development. Product development process. Product development projects. Creative working methods. Immaterial rights. Practice project which target is a product / system concept.

Teaching methods

Weekly lessons consists of theory of the course.
Team project work and self learning.

Employer connections

There are 3-5 lessons where technology and engineering companies located to Jyväskylä area will present their company and product development process. Also these companies has an opportunity to present their possibilities of summer training.

Exam schedules

There is exam at the end of the course. Two resits after that based on JAMK orders.

Student workload

Lectures 60 h.
Team exercise work including self-reliant work 75 h.
Total 135 h.

Content scheduling

More theory based lessons at the beginning of the course. Company presentations will start in the middle of the course.
Team exercise will start at the beginning of the course and it will continue through the whole course. At the end of the course there is end seminar for exercise.

Adequate (1): You can identify the basic knowledge and terminology but can only sufficiently apply them to simple product development tasks.

Satisfactory (2): You are familiar with the basic knowledge and terminology but can only satisfactorily apply them to product development tasks.
- You can explain the significance of the product development and innovation process among the other processes in a company in satisfactory way
- You are familiar with different types of product development processes and can describe their progress from a product idea to a finished product in the market in satisfactory way
- You are familiar with the basic project management tools in satisfactory way

Good (3): You master the essential knowledge and skills and can apply them to product development tasks:
- You can explain the significance of the product development and innovation process among the other processes in a company
- You are familiar with different types of product development processes and can describe their progress from a product idea to a finished product in the market
- You are familiar with the basic project management tools and can implement them in study projects
- You can use creative working methods in the innovation and solution of practical problems
- You can choose the right product protection methods of immaterial rights.

Very good (4): You master the essential knowledge and skills and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to product development tasks.
- You can explain the significance of the product development and innovation process among the other processes in a company
- You are familiar with different types of product development processes and can describe their progress from a product idea to a finished product in the market
- You are familiar with the basic project management tools and can implement them in study projects in very good level
- You can choose the right product protection methods of immaterial rights.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): You master the essential knowledge and skills of the course and can apply the knowledge acquired in a critical and innovative manner to demanding product development tasks
- You can explain the significance of the product development and innovation process among the other processes in a company
- You are familiar with different types of product development processes and can describe their progress from a product idea to a finished product in the market in excellent way
- You are familiar with the basic project management tools and can implement them in study projects in excellent level
- You can choose the right product protection methods of immaterial rights.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The approved course requires that:
- the team-specific training work has been completed with at least grade 1. The team project work is estimated on a grade scale of 0-5.
- the exam must be completed at least with a grade of 1.

Qualifications

Basics of 3-D modeling and technical drawings, basic knowledge of material technology. You are able to make workshop- and assembly drawings.
