Objective

Upon completion of this course the student should
- have a basic understanding of the Sports Law as it applies to amateur and professional sports in global contexts;
- develop a familiarization with sport laws and recognize different ways legal issues in sports are dealt in the global arena;
-recognize the legal positions of different sport bodies;
-understand and articulate principles of ethical behavior in international sports;
-be able to identify and analyze legal issues affecting sport business, athletes, managers and sports clubs;
-read and understand legal documents and contracts relevant to international sports; and
- apply general Sports Law principles for sport business operations.

Content

• Governing bodies of international sports, Court of Arbitration for Sport and dispute resolution;
• Individual athlete contracts, player transfers and agent/manager- player contracts;
• Doping / drug use and testing;
• Intellectual property, including copyright and trademark protection;
• Gambling and bribery;
• Contractual issues related to media rights, events and sponsorships.

Fall semester, JAMK main campus, online platform.

Journal articles and case studies will be given at the beginning and during the course.

Teaching methods

Course is a hybrid on-campus and online study entity. It combines face-to-face and distance learning methods where students participate in lectures (online or physical), workshops and other study activities.

Course will be run 100 % online in fall 2020.

Lectures, online webinars, assignments, individual studies.

You are able to demonstrate the basic theoretical and conceptual knowledge and define central concepts fairly clearly. You are able to describe the problem and somehow interpret and analyse complex business issues in question. You are able to support your argumentation with some basic academic literature and other relevant information. You take responsibility of your own work. You are able to communicate your findings in oral and written form responsibly. There are some issues in complying with JAMK reporting instructions.

Satisfactory 2
You are able to give some evidence on theoretical and conceptual knowledge and define central concepts.
Ypu are able to define the problem but have difficulties in interpretation and analysing of the complex business issues and legal problems arising and is not able to evaluate them from multiple perspectives. You are able to review academic literature and other relevant information from legal and academic sources in a satisfactory way. You are able to work independently and take responsibility of your team’s work. You are able to communicate your findings in oral and written form responsibly. There are minor issues in complying with JAMK reporting instructions.

Good 3
You can demonstrate theoretical and conceptual knowledge clearly. You can define central concepts well. You display fairly good command of the subject area. You are able to interpret and analyse complex business issues and legal problems arising from multiple perspectives fairly well and find academic literature and other relevant information from legal and academic sources to support his argumentation. You can combine the theoretical framework and practice. You can evaluate your work and develop your knowhow. You are able to communicate your findings in oral and written form responsibly in a well-structured manner. Your text mainly follows the JAMK reporting instructions.

You can demonstrate solid and right theoretical and conceptual knowledge. You can define central concepts accurately. You display a good command of the subject area. You are able to interpret and analyse complex business issues and legal problems arising from multiple perspectives well and critically review academic literature and other relevant information from legal and academic sources in a good manner. You are able to critically analyze your learning and develop your skills. You can produce relevant, logical and analytical content. You are able to communicate your findings in oral and written form responsibly and in a well-structured manner, and according to JAMK reporting instructions.

You can demonstrate theoretical and conceptual sports law knowledge in detail. You can define central concepts with precision. You display a clear command of the subject area. You are able to interpret and analyse complex sport business issues and legal problems arising from multiple perspectives and critically review academic literature and other relevant information from legal and academic sources in an excellent manner. You take responsibility of developing your expertise in this area and you are able to critically evaluate your own learning and progression. You present convincing results and content, and you are able to combine different frameworks and findings in your reporting. You are able to communicate your findings in oral and written form responsibly and in a well-structured manner, complying fully with JAMK reporting instructions.
