Content scheduling

Will be agreed on the first contact lesson of the course.

Objective

After completing the course, the student knows mechanical oscillations, and the principles and basics of mechanical and electromagnetic waves. The student masters kinematics and dynamics of oscillating systems. The student knows about behaviour of waves at boundaries.

EA-KN: The student gets basic knowledge about oscillations and wave motion for the field of technology
EA-EN EUR-ACE Engineering Analysis: The students know how to apply the learnt methods to solving practical problems.
YHTOP Learning Skills: The students can evaluate critically their test results utilizing calculators, tables and information technology. They are able to share their knowledge and apply the physics reporting skills to their other studies.

Content

Mechanical oscillations and wave motion: harmonic oscillation, damped oscillation, forced oscillation, energy of oscillating system, waves, energy and power of waves, intensity, reflection and refraction, interference, diffraction, Doppler effect, attenuation and sound.

Location and time

Course is implemented between 31.8 - 18.12.

Materials

Materials in the e-learning environment.

Teaching methods

- lectures
- independent study

Exam schedules

Dates and methods of the exams will be announced in the course opening.

Completion alternatives

The admission procedures are described in the degree rule and the study guide. The teacher of the course will give you more information on possible specific course practices.

Student workload

One credit (1 Cr) corresponds to an average of 27 hours of work.

- lectures 39 h
- independent study 42 h
Total 81 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The assessment is basic on mid-term tests or final exam and possibly calculation exercises. The grade is determined according to the following criteria:

Satisfactory (1): The student identifies and understands for the most part the basic concepts and principles of mechanical oscillations and mechanical and electromagnetic waves. The student is able to solve simple exercises on the topic.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows the basic concepts and principles of mechanical oscillations and mechanical and electromagnetic waves, and is able to apply them to calculation exercises.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): The student knows most of the key topics on oscillation and wave physics and is able to apply the learning to simple basic cases.

Very good (4): The student masters the key topics on oscillation and wave physics and is able to apply these skills to the most common cases

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): The student masters all course topics on oscillation and wave physics and is able to apply these skills critically and innovatively in challenging situations.
