Content scheduling

Will be agreed on the first contact lesson of the course.

Objective

After completing the course, the student masters basic concepts and principles of electromagnetism. The student masters the physical basics of passive electrical components, direct current motor, electric generator, antenna, optical fibre and understands their physical restrictions. The student knows about behaviour of electromagnetic waves in different media and at their boundaries.

EA-KN: Knowledge and Understanding: The student gets basic knowledge of electromagnetism for the field of technology
EA-EN EUR-ACE Engineering Analysis: The students know how to apply learnt methods to solving practical problems.
YHTOP Learning skills: The students are able to critically evaluate obtained results utilizing calculators, tables and information technology. The students are able to share their knowledge and apply the reporting skills gained in physics course to their other studies.

Content

The course contains basic concepts of electromagnetism such as electromagnetic induction, electromagnetic waves and the operating principles of their applications e.g. coil, capacitor, D/C motor, generator, antenna and of optical fibre.

Location and time

Course is implemented between 31.8 - 18.12.

Materials

Materials in the e-learning environment.

Teaching methods

- lectures
- independent study

Exam schedules

Dates and methods of the exams will be announced in the course opening.

Completion alternatives

The admission procedures are described in the degree rule and the study guide. The teacher of the course will give you more information on possible specific course practices.

Student workload

One credit (1 Cr) corresponds to an average of 27 hours of work.

- lectures 39 h
- independent study 42 h
Total 81 h

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The assessment is based on mid-term tests or final exam and possibly the calculation exercises. The grade is determined according to the following criteria:

Sufficient (1): The student knows the most of the basic concepts of electromagnetism and is able to solve simple tasks on it sufficiently.

Satisfactory (2): The student knows the basics of electromagnetism and is able to apply them to some basic cases.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): The student knows most of the key topics of electromagnetism and is able to apply the learnt skills to simple basic cases.

Very good (4): The student masters the essential topics of electromagnetism and is able to apply these skills to most common cases.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): The student masters all topics related to electromagnetism in the course content and is able to apply them even to critically challenging cases.

Qualifications

TTZM0400, TTZM0600 Mechanics, oscillation and wave physics
