Objective

The purpose of the course

This course will introduce you to the basic discipline of the Sociology of Education, the basic terminology, theoretical concepts and perspectives. In addition, you will consider the relationship between education and society and current phenomena. This course is a part of the Basic of Educational Sciences studies.

Course competences

In this course you will develop your future orientation. Future orientation refers to
- teachers being involved in creating the future for VET learning, working life and society by investigating and critically analysing existing practices and structures.
- the courage to rethink and support the development of social equality, democracy and human rights.

The learning objectives of the course

You will understand the basic concepts of educational sociology and you are able to analyse issues related to education as social and cultural phenomena.

Content

During this course, you will get acquainted with the education sociology. You look at people’s socialization into society and culture. You will become familiar with social phenomena such as school differentiation, differences in learning outcomes, exclusion and the heritability of education. You will also examine the roles and behavior of the teacher and the student, the gender debate, social justice and ethnicity. The course will guide you to think of the future of education, to try to look beyond the boundaries.

Teaching methods

Open Studies and Master's Degree education students: You can acquire the competence required in this course by self-directed learning, prescribed reading, online learning sessions and assignments.

During this course collaborative and participatory methods are implemented. The implementation methods deepen your professional competence and the development of your own professional field.

Student workload

In total, the course consists of 216 hours (8 x 27h) of students’ work
- Orientation 6 h
- Self-directed learning in online environment, reading the learning materials, completing the learning assignments 190 h
- Peer tutoring and self-assessment 20 h

The criteria for assessing the approved level are as follows:

- You will be able to critically assess the current state of education and training.
- You will be able to outline future directions for developing education and your own professional field and/or teaching.

Further information

The assessment is qualitative and is based on learning objectives. The methods for evaluation of the learning process are feedback and self-assessment. Competence assessment is based on criteria and the teacher educator makes the assessment decision once all the learning tasks have been completed. The assessment material consists of the learning tasks of the course and self-assessment tasks.
