Objective

Purpose:
After accomplishing Graphic design, you know the basics and phases of the technical and visual design and implementation of a printed product for various uses (e.g. multi-page brochure, poster, newspaper article, large-scale layout) using professional tools (Adobe: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). You will be able to take into account the principles of ethical advertising in your work. You will be able to understand the importance of visual identity in publications.

Learning outcomes:
You know the basics of technical and visual design of a printed product and be able to apply them in practice to a printed product. You know how to use professional tools to design a printed product. You have an understanding of the importance of visual identity in publications. You will take into account the principles of ethical advertising when designing content.

Materials

The course does not have public study material required to pass the course (books, articles, videos ect.). The materials of the course are available on course workspace online.

Teaching methods

Mode of delivery: Contact learning and some distance learning.

Implementation, planned learning activities and Teaching Methods:
Lectures, practical exercises, customer job, course assignment and seminar presentation. Course assignment can be partly completed online as virtual studies.

Employer connections

The course includes individual customer work, which means doing a design work for the real customer.

Completion alternatives

The recognition of prior learning, pass (S): You have the knowledge of a print and graphic design (previous education/ work experience) and you are able to present your work examples. Further information is available from course tutor.

Sufficient 1: You understand the design and implementation of a simple publication (process, methods and techniques). The assignment has been documented according to the requirements; however, it is very restricted.

Satisfactory 2: You have the knowledge of the design and implementation of a small-scale publication (process, methods and techniques). The assignment has been documented according to the requirements, however, it is brief.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good 3: You have the knowledge of the design and implementation of an impressive publication (process, methods and techniques). The course assignment has been documented according to the requirements and you can assess your own learning.

Very good 4: You master the design and implementation of an impressive publication (process, methods and techniques). The documentation of the course assignment is thorough, and you are able to assess your own learning critically.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent 5: You master extensively the design and implementation of a stylish and impressive (layout, composition, colours, fonts, graphics etc.) publication (process, methods and techniques) for various purposes. The documentation of the course assignment is comprehensive and thorough. You are able to assess your own learning critically.

Pass S:
You have the knowledge of a print and graphic design (previous education/ work experience) and you are able to present your work examples. Further information about possible course-specific arrangements is available from Course tutor.

Fail 0: You do not meet the minimum criteria set for the course.

Qualifications

Basics of user interface and usability design and implementation: mainly basics of image processing (colour settings, white balance, image crop, layers).
