Objective

Purpose of the course
The course is an introduction to the key concepts and sectors of the bioeconomy. You will become familiar to agriculture and forestry and their environmental and energy issues. You will learn how to make observations and reflect on them from different angles utilizing theoretical knowledge base. After completing this course you will have an overview of the primary production sector of bioeconomy.

Learning Outcomes
The student understands the basic concepts and the most important sectors of the bioeconomy.
The student is familiar with the main characteristics of the rural operating environment in Finland.
The student knows the big picture of agriculture and forestry and their conditions and limitations from different perspectives of sustainability.

Content

Introduction to fundamentals and sectors of bioeconomy in Finland.
Perspectives of sustainability as enabling and limiting factors of primary production.
Crop production, animal husbandry, forestry and bioenergy as forms of bioeconomy.

Teaching methods

Getting to know the basics of the bioeconomy in an authentic rural or virtual environment, lectures on topics, individual and group exercises, written assignments

Exam schedules

Active participation in contact teaching, written and oral group assignments, written assignment and report on selected bioeconomy topic.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The course is failed (0) if the student does not reach the minimum goals for passing the course.

The course is passed (S) when the student achieves the learning outcomes of the course, i.e.
Understands the basic concepts of the bioeconomy, the main sectors and the characteristics of the rural operating environment in Finland, as well as the main forms of agricultural and forestry production and their conditions and constraints from different aspects of sustainability.
