Objective

You will be able to engage in everyday and work-related communication situations. You will be able to use your own language learning strategies and actively seek language learning opportunities outside the classroom. You will be able to write simple texts about familiar topics. You will be able understand even longer texts by developing your reading strategies. You will have an expanded vocabulary of terms related to the field of nursing and working life.

You will be able to handle various basic nursing situations and everyday encounters. You will also be able to use coping strategies to make yourself understood.

Content

You will learn to
communicate in everyday and nursing situations;
develop your language learning strategies;
develop your reading strategies;
actively develop your out-of-class learning skill; and
develop your cultural knowledge, especially in the field of nursing.

You will study
how to understand and write documents, and
how to use coping strategies to make yourself understood.

Teaching methods

The degree programme provides the textbook for the course.

Lectures 48 h at the JAMK campus. We will have an intensive study day every other week from 8.30 to 14, usually on Thursdays (see the schedule on the calendar).
Independent study, virtual study and assignments 87 h.
Total 135 h (one credit equals 27 hours of student work).

We will have a written and oral exam in the end of the course.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1 You manage in routine everyday encounters and various basic nursing situations. You use coping strategies to make yourself understood. You write texts with the aid of a dictionary. You understand the main points of texts concerning familiar subjects. You understand slowed speech, but your ability to comprehend might require repetition and rephrasing.

2 You handle everyday encounters and various basic nursing situations. You use coping strategies to make yourself understood. You write texts with the aid of a dictionary. You understand the main points of texts concerning familiar subjects. You understand general speech, but your ability to comprehend might require a slowing down of the pace.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

3 You handle everyday and nursing situations, as well as conversations about familiar subjects. You use the key terminology related to work-related situations. You write various kinds of texts, but still require a dictionary. You understand general speech and the main points of texts concerning everyday and common nursing subjects.

4 You handle situations and conversations related to everyday and nursing subjects. You use the key terminology related to working life situations. You write various texts, although you might sometimes require a dictionary. You understand general speech spoken at a normal tempo and the main points of texts concerning everyday life and nursing subjects.

5 You effectively communicate in encounters and conversations about everyday life and nursing. You use the key terminology related to working life situations. You write various kinds of texts. Qualifications

Finnish 4 for Nursing or equivalent skills.
