Objective

After completing the course, you are able to aurally figure out the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic phenomena that occur in tonal and modal pop and jazz music. You are able to produce the aforementioned phenomena by singing or playing, and write down what you hear as sheet music. You know how to write a score and its related parts using a notation software.

You recognize and know how to produce even and swung rhythms, also in irregular and mixed meters. You master rhythmic sequences and the most common polyrhythms, and you know how to use your body to understand, produce and internalize rhythms.

You are able to evaluate the contents covered during the course in a constructive and critical manner. You are also able to evaluate your own competence and its development. You have the skills to further develop your musical perception skills as well as your motor skills and coordination.

Content

RHYTHMICS
- recap of syncopated and swung rhythms
- irregular and mixed meters
- rhythmic sequences and polyrhythms
- body percussion

SOLFEGE
- extended chords in tonal and modal music
- chord progressions in tonal and modal music
- modulating chord progressions
- melody in relation to the prevalent harmony
- chromatic alterations in melody

TRANSCRIPTION AND NOTATION
- common music terms in the original language and in Finnish and English
- transcription of the melody, harmony, bassline and rhythm of recorded and/or performed pop/jazz music
- use of a notation software
- score and part writing

Materials

The study material is self-study material with learning assignments distributed during the course, as well as other material that can be accessed online. All the material used during the course is in electronic format.

Teaching methods

During the course, you participate in contact and/or distance learning and carry out individual learning assignments on a regular basis. You will also get acquainted with the electronic study material distributed during the course.

Exam schedules

The written examinations of the course are held during contact lessons. After each examination, an attempt will be made to arrange one renewal opportunity.

Contact and/or distance learning and written ear training examinations: 45 h
Independent work (familiarization with the study material and performance of learning assignments): 90 h

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Pass (S):
You recognize and are able to produce rhythmic sequences and polyrhythms as well as rhythms in irregular and mixed meter. You recognize typical melodies in tonal and modal music as well as individual chord sounds and chord progressions. You are able to write down what you hear into clear notation using a notation software, including score and part writing, if necessary. You continuously evaluate your own competence and its development. You know how to acquire, process and critically evaluate information. You take responsibility for your own and the group's learning.

Further information

E.g. self-assessment and continuous feedback are used as evaluation methods. The learning tasks to be returned are evaluated through peer evaluation and/or evaluation by the teacher. The written examinations of the course will be assessed separately and 50% of the maximum points will be required for their approved completion.
