Objective

Student becomes familiar with information networks to the extent necessary from the point of view of automation and electrical engineering. By the course, the student acquires such basic knowledge of data transmission and data networks that is able to understand, for example, the structure of the data network between devices included in the automation system and the principles of data transmission. This course enables further studies of the subject in other courses.

EUR-ACE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Student is familiar with the concepts related to the data transmission network and the principles of data transmission of the most important active devices in the network, as well as the most important tasks. Student understands the steps of data transfer.

EUR-ACE APPLYING TECHNOLOGY INTO PRACTICE
Student is able to design and implement the most important services for local area network in electrical and automation technology. Student is able to analyze the data flow in network.

Content

Different steps of data transfer
Operating principle of the most important active devices in the network
Analysis of the data flow in network
Design and implementation of the local area network and its key services

Materials

Saharinen, Karo. 2021. Data Networks. http://datanetworks.pages.labranet.jamk.fi. The right amount of learning materials for 4 ECTS is instructed/defined at the start of 2023 autumn semester.

Teaching methods

- Lectures (flipped learning video)
- Practical exercises, virtual support
- Demonstration of skills as personal assignments

Employer connections

The course will contain points of view from the industry on how data networks operate in Finland.

Exam schedules

The course will use JAMK's Exam Studio where you can reserve exam times based on your own calendar/timetable.

Completion alternatives

The course can be done by accredition of competence. Agree upon the accreditation with the course lecturer. More information about accreditation in the degree regulations of JAMK and the study guide.

Student workload

4 ECTS * 27 h = 108 hours where,

33,25 h theory material, where
- 13,25 h = Video material/Lectures based on the text
- 20 h = re-reading the material
- 66,75 h = practical exercises
- 10 h = Self-study (reflecting, going through additional material, troubleshooting, using relevant tools)
- 4 h = Exam (this includes retakes if necessary)

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Sufficient (1): Student knows the basic concepts related to data transmission networks and understands the principles and tasks of data transmission of active devices in the network. Student is just able to interpret the content of measured and analyzed data stream. In addition, student is able to plan and implement the local area network and its key services and functions at a sufficient level.

Satisfactory (2): Student is familiar with the basic concepts related to data transmission networks and has a satisfactory understanding of the principles and tasks of data transmission for active devices in the network. Student is able to interpret the content of a partially measured and analyzed data stream. In addition, student is able to design and implement a local area network and its key services and functions at a satisfactory level.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Good (3): Student is familiar with the basic concepts related to data transmission networks and has a good understanding of the principles and tasks of data transmission of active devices in the network. Student is able to interpret the most important aspects of the content of the measured and analyzed data stream. In addition, student is able to design and implement a local area network and its key services and functions at a good level.

Very good (4): Student is familiar with the basic concepts related to data transmission networks and has a very good understanding of the principles and tasks of data transmission in the active devices of the network. Student is able to interpret the content of the measured and analyzed data stream mainly. In addition, student is able to design and implement a local area network and its key services and functions at a very good level.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Excellent (5): Student is familiar with the basic concepts related to data transmission networks and has an excellent understanding of the principles and tasks of data transmission of active devices in the network. Student is able to interpret the content of the measured and analyzed data stream without any problems. In addition, student is able to design and implement the local area network and its key services and functions at an excellent level.
